Climate: New study slashes estimate of icecap loss
n the last two years, several teams have estimated Greenland is shedding roughly 230 gigatonnes of ice, or 230 billion tonnes, per year and West Antarctica around 132 gigatonnes annually.
Together, that would account for more than half of the annual three-millimetre (0.2 inch) yearly rise in sea levels, a pace that compares dramatically with 1.8mm (0.07 inches) annually in the early 1960s.
But, according to the new study, published in the September issue of the journal Nature Geoscience, the ice estimates fail to correct for a phenomenon known as glacial isostatic adjustment.
This is the term for the rebounding of Earth's crust following the last Ice Age.
Glaciers that were kilometers (miles) thick smothered Antarctica and most of the northern hemisphere for tens of thousands of years, compressing the elastic crust beneath it with their titanic weight.

White House, Petraeus warn burning of Koran could endanger troops - Washington Times
Gen. Petraeus said he is 'very concerned' about possible repercussions of the pastor's actions.
'It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan. It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community,' Gen. Petraeus said in a statement.
The Rev. Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla., says his actions are intended to send 'a clear message to the radical element of Islam.'

Who Are The Poor?
When we hear of the poor, we envision a massive group of people without food and shelter. In reality, most of the poor in capitalistic countries such as the United States are not in such a state. Data from a recent census reveals that of the official "poor":[1]
- 76 percent have air conditioning.
- 66 percent have more than two rooms of living space per person.
- 97 percent own at least one color television.
- 62 percent have either cable or satellite television.
- Almost 75 percent of households own a car (30 percent own two or more).
- 73 percent own microwave ovens.
- More than 50 percent have stereos.
- 33 percent have automatic dishwashers.
- 99 percent have refrigerators.
- Virtually none lack running water or flushing toilets.
- 46 percent own their own home, the average of which is a three bedroom house with 1.5 baths, that has a carport and porch or patio, and the average value of which is 70 percent of the median American home.

It wasn’t that long ago that I was having lunch with the father of a friend at Mory’s, the venerable dining club at Yale, and he said to me: “Do you realize, Roger, that tuition at Yale next year will be $10,000? Ten-thousand dollars.” We paused for a moment over the Golden Buck to savor this enormous sum.
Ten-thousand dollars per annum was indeed a tidy sum. It is still is. But if you hope to join the Whiffenpoofs next year, it’s going to cost someone at least $52,900."

The Small Business Tax Hike and the 97 Percent Fallacy
President Barack Obama has called for the permanent extension of the Bush tax cuts for singles with incomes below $200,000 and married couples with incomes below $250,000, but has proposed that most of the tax cuts for households with higher incomes be allowed to expire. The president and his supporters have repeatedly asserted that the expiration of these cuts will have little impact because they affect only a tiny fraction of the wealthiest Americans, say Kevin A. Hassett, director of economic policy studies and a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and Alan D. Viard, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the planned tax increases would exempt "98 percent of American families and about 97 percent of small businesses." However, the impact is far more severe than Pelosi leads on. In fact, the sound bite about 3 percent of small businesses is one of the more misleading statements in the long history of economic propaganda, say Hassett and Viard.
- The 3 percent figure, which is computed from Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data, is based on simply counting the number of returns with any pass-through business income.
- So, if somebody makes a little money selling products on eBay and reports that income on Schedule C of their tax return, they are counted as a small business.
- The fact that there are millions of people in the lower tax brackets with small amounts of business income is irrelevant for the assessment of the economic impact of the tax hikes.
The relevant number is clear, say Hassett and Viard.
- According to IRS data, fully 48 percent of the net income of sole proprietorships, partnerships and S corporations reported on tax returns went to households with incomes above $200,000 in 2007.
- That's the number to look at, not the 3 percent.
For those who are determined to tax the rich at all costs, the tax hikes may well make sense. But the evidence is clear that lifting the top rates will hamper the business investment upon which our nation's prosperity depends. That affects all Americans, not just 3 percent, say Hassett and Viard.

A Thank You From Michelle Obama

For only the second time in my adult life, I am not ashamed of my country.
I want to thank the hard working American people for paying $242,000 (plus a few hundred thou in additional expenses) for my vacation in Spain. My daughter Sasha, several long-time family friends, my personal staff and various guests had a wonderful time. Honestly, you just haven't lived until you have stayed in a $2,500.00 per night suite at a 5-Star luxury hotel. We only booked 70 rooms for our friends, staff and family. Thank you also for the use of Air Force 2 and the 70 Secret Service personnel who tagged along to be sure we were safe and cared for at all times — with our 13-vehicle convoy.
Air Force 2 only used 47,500 gallons of jet fuel for this trip and carbon emissions were a mere 1,031 tons of CO2. It costs only $11,500 per hour to operate Air Force 2 and each additional plane for the other members of our party group. These are only rough estimates, but they are close (who's counting?). That's quite a carbon footprint as my good friend Al Gore would say, so we must ask the American citizens to drive smaller, more fuel efficient cars and drive less too, so we can lessen our combined carbon footprint.
I know times are hard and millions of you are struggling to put food on the table and trying to make ends meet. I do appreciate your sacrifice and do hope you find work soon. I was really exhausted after Barack took our family on a luxury vacation in Maine a few weeks ago. I just had to get away for a few days. Will write more from Martha's Vineyard where we will spend our sixth vacation this year with more of our family and friends.
With Gratitude,
Michelle Obama

A registered Democrat, Mr. Loeb has given and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Democrats. Less than a year ago, he was considered to be among the Wall Street elite still close enough to the White House to be invited to a speech in Lower Manhattan, where President Obama outlined the need for a financial regulatory overhaul.
So it came as quite a surprise on Friday, when Mr. Loeb sent a letter to his investors that sounded as if he were preparing to join Glenn Beck in Washington over the weekend.
“As every student of American history knows, this country’s core founding principles included nonpunitive taxation, constitutionally guaranteed protections against persecution of the minority and an inexorable right of self-determination,” he wrote. “Washington has taken actions over the past months, like the Goldman suit that seem designed to fracture the populace by pulling capital and power from the hands of some and putting it in the hands of others.”"

A study by Equifax Inc. and Moody's Analytics Inc. says the downturn began in early 2007 and cost $4 trillion through March. The Federal Reserve says the downturn began in the fourth quarter of 2006 and cost $7.1 trillion through March.
To put a $7.1 trillion loss of housing values into perspective, if you bulldozed half-million-dollar McMansions until their cumulative lost value equaled $7.1 trillion, you'd level 14.2 million homes.
Psychologically, this massive loss of equity has changed - at least for now - the view of homeownership as a major source of wealth. I sometimes imagine myself in the role of a latter day Roman contrarian, living in a time of my country’s certaindissolution on the eve of an invasion by barbarian hordes bent on loot and conquest. On one hand, will granting twelve million illegal, mostly Mexican aliens the right to vote and so skew the November election returns, secure for Democrats their continued occupation of Congress and President Barack Obama the freedom to “transform” the country? The Democrats have been put on notice by the electorate that they will be bounced, so will they resort to underhanded immigration reform and gerrymandering to ensure their hegemony?
On the other, will the country be inundated with hordes of Muslims, whose first allegiance is to the Islamic Ummah, whose creed regards the Constitution as an abomination? I would not be the first observer to note that illegal (and even many legal) Mexicans and Muslims harbor a peculiarly insular and ingrained xenophobia for their adopted country and a bizarre fealty for the countries they fled.

Google Crowned 'King of Malware' - PCWorld
According to the company, an analysis of 25,000 trending topics across 5.5 million search results [PDF], Google accounted for 69 percent of all malware found, with Yahoo at 18 percent, Bing (which supplies Yahoo search) at 12 percent, and Twitter on 1 percent.
Artwork: Chip TaylorAs for the trend topics that drive malware in search results, the gap between one appearing on Twitter and in search results varied from 1.2 days on Google to 4.3 days in Bing, and 4.8 days on Yahoo. This suggests that one reason for Google's popularity in the malware stakes is simply is responsiveness in picking up on these trending subjects. Malware embedded in search simply follows this.
The other is perhaps its outright popularity. According to a recent comScore analysis, 62.6 percent of all US search traffic is on Google's site, well ahead of yahoo's 18.9 percent and Bing's 12.7 percent."

Nazi Dreams were Green Dreams — Emerging Corruption
Anti-Semitism is on the rise in Europe and elsewhere around the world, driven in part by the Islamic hatred of Jews, but also reflected in the liberal antipathy to corporations and the financial community, often portrayed as “Jewish bankers”, as history’s favorite scapegoat for economic problems. The situation mirrors Germany in the 1930s.
Few know of the connection, but it is spelled out in “Nazi Oaks” by R. Mark Musser ($12.75, Advantage Books, softcover, via Amazon.com). Thanks to his research we learn that “the highway to modern environmentalism passed through Nazi Germany. By 1935, the Third Reich was the greenest regime on the planet.”

Lucas Smith Interview: Alleged Obama Kenyan Birth Certificate Sent to Every Member of Congress, Got Notice!? | Birther Report: Obama Release Your Records
(Sept. 5, 2010) — Lucas Daniel Smith has just completed a mailing to each member of Congress a copy of a document which he stated is a certified copy of the original birth certificate of Barack Hussein Obama II showing that Obama was born in Kenya, Africa. Each birth certificate copy was sent with a seven-page, individually-notarized letter by certified mail. The project was completed on August 31, 2010.
Smith said that he obtained the document from the Coast Province General Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya in February 2009. The document became part of a lawsuit filed by Dr. Orly Taitz, Esq., in California which was denied a hearing in October 2009 by JudgeDavid O. Carter.
Mr. Smith’s declaration to the court, taken under oath, is here.
A video produced by “On Second Thought” TV following one of the preliminary court hearings last summer depicts Mr. Smith discussing some of the details of the document is here. A video which Mr. Smith produced himself showing close-ups of the document details is here.
In an interview with the Christian News Review on July 13, 2010, Mr. Smith described his background as a sociologist studying in Africa, how he obtained the document from Coast Province General Hospital, the cost, and the military and police presence there. A second interview with Steve Cooper of The Conservative Monster from August 18, 2010 can be found here.
The Post & Email had previously reported that the spelling of “Mombasa” had been “Mombassa” in 1961, but Mr. Smith has refuted that statement. Indeed, this writer has performed a five-page search using the words “history of Mombasa, Kenya,” and found no evidence of its being spelled “Mombassa.”
Page 635 of the Encyclopedia Britannica (pictured below) utilized by Smith for his research on the history of Kenya also refers to the port city as “Mombasa.” However, one website which has been following the Obama eligibility controversy incorrectly reports the spelling on the document as “Mombassa.”
Kenya obtained its independence from Great Britain in 1963.
The document which Mr. Smith has reported is a certified copy of the original birth certificate appears below: [embedded below]
The Post & Email asked Mr. Smith a number of questions regarding his travels to Africa, how he obtained the document, and his decision to send it to every member of Congress, a project which was completed on August 31, 2010. Our questions are in bold.

Both rates increased despite a rise of 290,000 in the number of people who are employed. The number of unemployed people in the U.S. also rose, but by a smaller amount — 261,000. The unemployment rates moved up as more unemployed people moved back into the labor force to look for jobs. More than half a million people re-entered the job market last month, as the overall labor force rose 550,000."

Hot Post: 8/28 Restoring Honor Rally – Notes from the Pit of Hatred | NewsReal Blog
This hot post was first published on August 30.
I wrote a month or so ago about my intention to attend the 8/28 Restoring Honor Rally despite the not-so-subtle-threats of the New Black Panthers and the “looming” presence of Al Sharpton. I confess though as the date drew near I succumbed to profound misgivings—given dire warnings from the media that the rally would almost certainly turn into some combination of a Bund rally and a race riot. It was only after NPR assured me that it might not degenerate into a pit of hatred that I felt comfortable venturing into that maelstrom.
Stoking even more suspicions is how secretive Beck is being. Little is known about the event except that there will be speeches by Beck and Sarah Palin, and attendees are prohibited from bringing signs. The fear, of course, is that it will turn into a pit of hatred a la the health-care town halls. But there may be a glimmer of hope.
Lord have mercy yes, those town halls replete with shrill harpies–hatefully demanding their representatives actually read that door stopper of a bill before voting on it–almost brought us to the brink of anarchy. In some cases the walkers and homemade signs also posed a threat to orderly movement (especially for politicians attempting a hasty retreat using the Pelosi crab walk), but let’s not dwell on that terrible, terrible chapter of American history.

"[A] wise and frugal government ... shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government." --Thomas Jefferson
Culture

"Can all of America's political problems be solved by returning to constitutional, limited government? The answer given by many conservatives and libertarians is a resounding yes. Reading the Founding Fathers, the answer would generate a more complex answer. In the Federalist Papers, the authors dedicate considerable space to history's failed experiments in self-government. John Adams wrote in 1798, 'Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.' What Adams suggests is the people's character impacts our government's character. The early generations of Americans were independent-minded folks. Help for those in need came from the church, the family, or the community. Citizens expected only a few limited functions to be performed by the state. In 21st century America, we expect the government to provide Social Security retirement and disability, unemployment insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, student loans, and Pell Grants. Parents expect their children to have a free public education through thirteen years of school. ... We cannot effect a permanent reduction in the size and scope of government, or meaningful government reform, unless we change our culture's demand for the government to provide our every need. ... This isn't to say government must or can solve our culture's problems. However, those on the right who think conservative goals for limited government can be achieved through passing economic legislation are spitting in the wind. We will never have a limited government until we have a culture that allows for one." --columnist Adam Graham
