The REAL Reason Ben Bernanke Leaves a Paperweight on the “Print” Button When His Finger Gets Tired | zero hedge

The REAL Reason Ben Bernanke Leaves a Paperweight on the “Print” Button When His Finger Gets Tired | zero hedge: "We’ve been over the numerous BS excuses that US Dollar destroyer extraordinaire Ben Bernanke has made for QE enough times that today I’d rather simply focus on the REAL reason he continues to funnel TRILLIONS of Dollars into the Wall Street Banks.

I’ve written this analysis before. But given the enormity of what it entails, it’s worth repeating. The following paragraphs are the REAL reason Bernanke does what he does no matter what any other media outlet, book, investment expert, or guru tell you.

Bernanke is printing money and funneling it into the Wall Street banks for one reason and one reason only. That reason is: DERIVATIVES.

According to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s Quarterly Report on Bank Trading and Derivatives Activities for the Second Quarter 2010 (most recent), the notional value of derivatives held by U.S. commercial banks is around $223.4 TRILLION.

Five banks account for 95% of this. Can you guess which five?"

Obama friend of Shariah - Greensburg, KS - Kiowa County Signal: "Washington —

Like ordinary folks, presidents of the United States are known by the company they keep. It is a test of their character. Often it shapes their policies. And, in the case of Barack Obama, it may blight his legacy and our nation’s security interests.

Until now, one of the most egregious examples of the problem were the “Friends of Bill” who played prominent roles in William Jefferson Clinton’s presidency. Those folks included a mix of unsavory political operatives, Chinese agents and convicted felons. [Their overnight stays in the Lincoln bedroom, legally challenged fundraising and eleventh-hour pardons raised serious questions not just about President Clinton’s ethics, but his judgment.]

President Obama’s trusted circle has been, if anything, even more problematic. For example, Mr. Obama has consorted with people who are revolutionaries, communists, liberation theologians and Islamists. Some have even been appointed “czars” in his administration."

U.S. faces $70 billion inflation hit - Street Sweep: Fortune's Wall Street Blog

U.S. faces $70 billion inflation hit - Street Sweep: Fortune's Wall Street Blog

Rising food and energy prices could deal a $70 billion blow to the economy, but the recovery is likely to limp along anyway.

If the recent run-up in energy and agricultural commodities persists, U.S. consumers will have to shell out $20 billion more for energy and $50 billion more for food this year, Capital Economics estimates.

Not as miserable?

Among other things, that squeeze on consumer budgets will eat up most of the payroll tax holiday bonus that Americans were supposed to get out of the deal in Congress that extended the Bush tax cuts, at some cost to the deficit. So much for the stimulus bump.

GM's Taxpayer-Funded Ad Spending Spree | National Legal and Policy Center

GM's Taxpayer-Funded Ad Spending Spree | National Legal and Policy Center: "General Motors is certainly finding ways to spend the $50 billion taxpayer infusion they received less than two years ago. Anyone watching the Super Bowl witnessed a heavy GM presence with ads running pre-game, game time, post-game and even during a special Chevy sponsored Glee episode afterwards. The Chevy logo was predominately displayed, sometimes taking up nearly half of the TV screen, during the post game show that featured GM benevolently giving a new Chevy Camaro to Super Bowl MVP, Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers made about $9 million in 2010, but I'm sure he still appreciates the nice car that taxpayers helped pay for.

Ad time during the Super Bowl costs about $3 million for a 30 second spot. During the game, General Motors ran five commercials for a total cost of approximately $15 million. One of the spots focused on the Chevy Volt. Besides disagreeing with the decision by GM to spend $3 million on a 30 second ad for a vehicle that sold 321 units in January, I found another of their commercials to be insulting to senior citizens."

According to the Congressional Budget Office, this will be the third consecutive year in which the federal government is running a deficit near or greater than $1 trillion. The solution to the government's fiscal crisis must begin by cutting spending in all areas, particularly in those that can be better run at the state or local level. Last month I introduced legislation to do just that. And though it seems extreme to some—containing over $500 billion in spending cuts enacted over one year—it is a necessary first step toward ending our fiscal crisis."

I am not among those who fear the people. They, and not the rich, are our dependence for continued freedom. And to preserve their independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. If we run into such debts, as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements, for our callings and our creeds, as the people of England are, our people, like them, must come to labor sixteen hours in the twentyfour, give the earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses; and the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live, as they now do, on oatmeal and potatoes; have no time to think, no means of calling the mismanagers to account; but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellowsufferers."

As the Roman Catholic Church includes both those who practice leftist liberation theology and conservative anti-abortion advocates, so the Brotherhood includes both practical reformers and firebrand ideologues.

The comparison might have made sense five or six hundred years ago when the Catholic Church and the state were intertwined and the Church ordered heretics to be burnt at the stake. But, in case the Times hasn’t noticed, the Church has moved on since then while Islamic sharia law, on which the Muslim Brotherhood’s ideology is based, has not."

Is Energy Independence Realistic?

For one, the not so notable increase in oil prices was to be expected either way. On the other hand, assuming some of the oil price increase was related to fears of supply shortfalls given the shipping lanes under Egypt's purview, what becomes apparent is that even if the United States were totally oil sufficient, our being that way would in no way shield us from global events that might reduce supply while increasing costs."

Morning Bell: California Cap and Trade Tripped Up By Pollution Rhetoric | The Foundry: Conservative Policy News.: "The economic harms of carbon cap-and-trade policies are so well established that even a state as reliably leftist as California has never been able to pass a plan through their legislature. Instead, environmentalists in the Golden State have relied on the California Air Resources Board (CARB), whose appointed governing board is democratically unaccountable, to develop and impose carbon regulations by bureaucratic fiat. And this past December, much to the delight of many environmentalists, CARB passed the first carbon cap-and-trade scheme in the United States. Everything looked ready to go … until a San Francisco Superior Court judge issued a ruling, just made public last week, that, if made final, would stop CARB from implementing its plan. The plaintiffs in the suit? The Center on Race, Poverty, and the Environment."

U.N. and West warn rushed Egypt change a risk to Mideast - swissinfo

U.N. and West warn rushed Egypt change a risk to Mideast - swissinfo: "MUNICH (Reuters) - The United Nations on Sunday drove home the warning from Western nations that a transition to democracy in Egypt should not be rushed to avoid worsening the crisis and destabilising the entire Middle East.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon backed up calls at a security conference in Munich from the United States and Europe for a rapid change of power in Egypt followed by a more sedate transition through democracy and eventually free elections.

Ban told reporters he had urged authorities in Cairo 'to make the necessary changes and reforms as soon as possible. I hope the leaders of Egypt heed the calls of their own people.'"

GOP takes aim at 'Obama agenda' backers for 2012 - Washington Times

GOP takes aim at 'Obama agenda' backers for 2012 - Washington Times: "When Sen. Joe Manchin III, West Virginia Democrat, voted last week to block a Republican attempt to repeal the 2010 health care law, his action on some levels was routine. The vote was straight along party lines, and the GOP effort was viewed largely as a symbolic gesture with little chance of success.

Within hours, however, the Republican public relations machine cranked into action, firing up press releases, videos and a website that attacked the newly minted senator for his vote and support of “the Obama agenda.”"

Govt asked to explain failure to stop fatwa: "The High Court yesterday ordered district officials in Shariatpur to explain why they failed to protect 14-year-old rape victim Hena from being whipped to death as per a fatwa on Monday.

The deputy commissioner, the superintendent of police of Shariatpur and the thana nirbahi officer of Naria upazila -- where the incident took place--will have to report to the HC in 15 days how it happened although the court (HC) had eight months ago declared fatwa illegal and a punishable offence.

In a suo moto rule, the HC directed them also to report what steps they have taken in this regard.

An HC bench comprised of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain issued the rule following press reports on the killing of Hena."

At a security conference in Munich, he argued the UK needed a stronger national identity to prevent people turning to all kinds of extremism.

He also signalled a tougher stance on groups promoting Islamist extremism.

Locked and loaded: Concealed carry grows as critics’ fears of ‘bloodbath’ proven wrong - morningjournal.com: "LORAIN — Nearly 200,000 Ohioans have been issued a license to carry a concealed handgun since the state’s concealed carry law took effect in April 2004.

Here in Lorain County, since 2004, a total of 5,416 concealed carry licenses have been issued. In 2010 alone, the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office issued 852 new licenses, according to data provided by the Attorney General’s Office and Sgt. Diana Nicholl. In 2009, 798 licenses were issued. The number of new applicants has grown annually since 2006.

Neighboring Huron County issued 234 licenses in 2009, and Erie County’s sheriff issued 1,058.

“I think the consensus is that folks want them so they can, if they so desire, carry a concealed handgun to protect themselves, their loved ones or acquaintances,” Erie County Sheriff Capt. Paul Sigsworth said.

When the law first went into effect, opponents argued there would be more crime and weapons assaults. That has largely proven to not be the case, Lorain County Sheriff Phil Stammitti said."

Video: Has Revelation's 'pale rider' shown up in Egypt?

Video: Has Revelation's 'pale rider' shown up in Egypt?: "A mysterious, pale green figure seen in televised news coverage of the Egyptian riots has prompted some viewers to ask, 'Could this be the Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse?'

The footage, provided by Euronews and subsequently seen on MSNBC, CNN and uploaded over a dozen times to the popular video sharing site YouTube, captures the fiery, violent protests in Cairo this past week … and something else.

Between the crowds of protesters and barricades, the video shows a flowing, pale green image that resembles an erect rider atop a horse in Medieval-like barding. The ethereal figure remains for a few moments before floating over protesters' heads and off the screen.

The last of the biblical Book of Revelation's Four Horseman of the Apocalyse, the 'pale rider' is said to be the bringer of death and the forerunner of 'hell' on earth."

FT.com / Global insight - Future in Arab region up for grabs: "After the US-backed jihad against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan during the last decade of the cold war, thousands of Arab volunteers, recruited under indulgent western eyes, returned home fired with belief that if they could triumph against a superpower they could surely puncture the inflated autocrats dictating life in their own countries. It turned out these zealots could not.

Their insurgencies in Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Egypt all failed. Ayman al-Zawahiri, leader of Egypt’s Islamic Jihad, the group that assassinated Anwar Sadat, Hosni Mubarak’s predecessor, went off to join Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda."

So it was a notable shift when Obama went deeply devout for last week's National Prayer Breakfast, telling attendees the role daily prayer plays in his life.

'When I wake in the morning, I wait on the Lord, and I ask Him to give me the strength to do right by our country and its people,' Obama said. January's Unemployment Report Was A Snow Job

January's Unemployment Report Was A Snow Job: "The January employment report was a complete snow job. Abominable winter blizzards across the country caused 886,000 workers to report “not at work due to bad weather,” according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is 600,000 more than the normal 300,000 not at work for the average January of the past decade.

So the bad weather has distorted the numbers. The actual 36,000 increase in nonfarm payrolls and the 50,000 gain in private payrolls really don’t have a snowball’s chance at being accurate. The 1 million people in January who wanted a job but didn’t look for one because of “other” reasons hints again at the bad-weather distortion. So does the 4.9 million jump in the part-time workforce.

As for the 9 percent unemployment rate, it’s not likely to last as more people are recorded reentering the labor force in the months ahead. The household employment survey (on which the unemployment rate is based) increased 117,000 in January, following a near 300,000 gain in December."

The Mouse that Roared: Chris Matthews Declares War on Glenn Beck | NewsReal Blog

The Mouse that Roared: Chris Matthews Declares War on Glenn Beck | NewsReal Blog: "In 1955, satirist Leonard Wibberly wrote a sendup of American foreign aid called, The Mouse that Roared, in which a microscopic, medieval and poverty stricken country, the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, invades the United States in order to be defeated and rebuilt like Germany and Japan. In 1959, it was released as a pretty good adaptation starring Peter Sellers.

This week, Chris Matthews declared war on Glen Beck, undoubtedly hoping Beck would respond and millions of people who don’t know Chris Matthews exists would become aware of his TV show, Hardball.

Among the ironic comments included a shot from Chris that Beck’s ratings were down a third… in other words, (if true) Beck has lost from his audience about 3 times the number of Harball’s total audience.

This would leave Beck with an audience a mere 6 times that of Matthews– about the same as ever, since Matthews suffered a drop of about a quarter, himself!"

Saturday's edition of Swiss daily Tribune de Geneve quoted the Jewish charity's lawyer, Robert Equey, as saying the visit was canceled because of the risk that protests by left-wing groups could result in violence."

Only two days ago, the media were covering a comment by Obama in 2008 where he said that he did not want mandatory insurance as part of health-care reform (they neglected to add that Obama actually wanted a government-controlled socialist single-payer model).

We are all being set up. These guys do not want Obamacare to go to the Supreme Court because it will force the justices to define the limits of the powers of Congress and the executive branch. So they (Democrats and RINOs) are preparing us for a repeal of Obamacare in such a way that Obama can let it happen without embarrassing himself.

He and his minions (the “Co” in Obama & Co) fake unemployment figures to suit their agenda, while thousands and thousands of Americans continue to lose jobs each and every month. U.S. Ambassador Cynthia Stroum Called "Bullying, Hostile" in State Department Investigation - Political Hotsheet - CBS News: "One way that presidents reward their biggest donors is by offering them plum ambassadorships. Which is why it wasn't surprising when the Obama administration tapped Cynthia Stroum to be U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg.

Stroum, a businesswoman and philanthropist, had been a major bundler for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, raising more than half a million dollars for the then-candidate.

It appears that her fundraising abilities did not translate to diplomatic success, however: According to a scathing State Department probe out Thursday (PDF), Stroum was seen by most employees as 'aggressive, bullying, hostile and intimidating.'

The probe found that Stroum's 'confrontational management style,' staffing problems and 'the absence of a sense of direction' have brought much of the Luxembourg embassy 'to a state of dysfunction.'

Things got so bad, the report says, that staffers asked for transfers to Afghanistan and Iraq due in part to 'a climate of acute stress' at the embassy."

According to an internal State Department report released Thursday, less than a week after she quit, Stroum's management of the U.S. Embassy in the tiny country was abysmal. The report says her tenure of about one year was fraught with personality conflicts, verbal abuse and questionable expenditures on travel, wine and liquor.

Stroum's case illustrates the pitfalls that presidents can face when they appoint non-career diplomats to ambassadorships as a reward for their political support."

Judges there this week got rid of the case with six words: 'The petition for review is denied.' Canadian Dollar Reaches Highest Level Since May 2008 on Economic Growth - Bloomberg: "Canada’s dollar reached the strongest level since May 2008 as the nation’s economy and employment grew more than forecast, boosting confidence in the recovery.

The Canadian currency rose the most in two months against the U.S. dollar this week after two straight weekly declines. The loonie, as the currency is known for the image of the waterfowl on the C$1 coin, gained against most of its major counterparts as oil, the nation’s largest export, reached a two- year high."

A day after being attack by a mob of supporters of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and then assaulted again by the same rabble rousers who smashed his car window, CNN's star anchor has moved to a Cheney-esque 'undisclosed location' out of fear for his and his crew's safety amid the ongoing tumult.

Luckily, not a hair on that beautiful white mane of his has been harmed. But he's not the only journalist under assault.

Palin says Obama's policies have US on road to ruin | Reuters: "SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Feb 4 (Reuters) - Republican Sarah Palin said on Friday an explosion of government spending and debt under President Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats had put the United States on 'the road to ruin.'

In a tribute to former President Ronald Reagan, the potential 2012 White House contender said leaders in Washington had lost sight of the values that made Reagan a Republican icon and a hero to conservatives -- a belief in limited government, low taxes and personal freedoms."

WikiLeaks cables: US agrees to tell Russia Britain's nuclear secrets - Telegraph: "Information about every Trident missile the US supplies to Britain will be given to Russia as part of an arms control deal signed by President Barack Obama next week.

Defence analysts claim the agreement risks undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal.

The fact that the Americans used British nuclear secrets as a bargaining chip also sheds new light on the so-called “special relationship”, which is shown often to be a one-sided affair by US diplomatic communications obtained by the WikiLeaks website."

Stunner. Obama Gets His Information from Anti-Semitic Aljazeera Channel | The Gateway Pundit: "Stunner. President Obama gets his Middle East news from the anti-Semitic anti-American Aljazeera channel.
The Business Insider reported, via FOX Nation:

The Daily Beast just posted an “exclusive” look inside the White House’s “scramble” to find the right response to the unfolding crisis in Egypt this week.

The short version is that the crisis caught U.S. intelligence off guard and they were slow to react. But here’s the line that jumped out at me.

Now, huddled in the big office of their boss—one of the administration policy-makers trying to calibrate the U.S. response to the unfolding drama—the advisers watched Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s first statement. Two television sets were running, one showing CNN and the other a satellite feed from Al Jazeera.

That’s right, even the President of the United States is watching Al Jazeera. Needless to say this is a far cry from the time (just two years ago!) that Colin Powell declared on Meet the Press that “those kind of images going out on Al Jazeera are killing us.”"

White House Insider: Obama is Clueless. Totally Clueless | Newsflavor: "Author’s Note: While not expecting this email from Insider, we are very thankful to have received it. Here is that email in its entirety.

    ______

Had to send you this quick message. Feel free to publish all of it if you wish. First, I am so disappointed in the response by Obama White House to the crisis in Egypt. White House was caught completely off guard on this one despite indications they were informed of just such a scenario a number of times over the past year or so. They ignored the warnings. When the protests started did you notice the confused messaging from the administration? Hillary says one thing. Biden says another thing. Obama says basically nothing. These are the situations where an American president can either rise to the occasion and show strength and wisdom or where they appear weak and uncertain. I don’t need to explain to you what our current president did. If this goes badly, and it appears it very well could, American interests in the region will be placed in very grave danger. The parallels to Carter are stunning. Oh how I miss the days when the party was led by the likes of Scoop. I fear the mishandling of the Egypt situation is going to result in a total chaos in that country soon."
