In his kitchen table at his Falmouth home, Neil Anderson holds the calendar where he and his wife record their daily reactions to the wind turbine located nearby.

FALMOUTH, Mass. — Standing on his home’s porch, Neil Anderson points through the thicket of trees in his front yard and across Blacksmith Shop Road towards one of his closest neighbors: A wind turbine.

“Right now we are 1,320 feet, which is one-quarter mile south of Wind One, which is Falmouth’s first wind turbine. It’s been online since April. And we’ve been trying to get it stopped since April,” Anderson says.

Wind One, as the turbine is officially called, is owned by the town of Falmouth and is located at the town’s wastewater treatment plant, where it stands 262 feet tall to the turbine’s hub. That’s about 10 feet taller than the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown. The blades extend just shy of 400 feet, which is about half the height of the John Hancock Building in Boston.

White House memo notes shortage of applicants for contest to have Obama to speak at high school graduation - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

White House memo notes shortage of applicants for contest to have Obama to speak at high school graduation - Political Hotsheet - CBS News: "The White House is ramping up an effort to promote a nationwide competition to decide which high school wins a commencement speech by President Obama.

An internal White House memo indicates that the White House is facing a shortage of applications less than a week before the deadline.

The competition was extended from the February 25 deadline until Friday, March 11 after few schools met the original application deadline. CBS News has learned a White House Communications Office internal memo dated February 22 noted 'a major issue with the Commencement Challenge.'

'As of yesterday we had received 14 applications and the deadline is Friday,' the memo said. The memo also urged recipients to, 'please keep the application number close hold.'

A follow-up memo on February 28 reported receipt of 68 applications. Noting the competition among more than 1,000 schools last year, the memo said, 'Something isn't working.' It called on staffers to ask 'friendly congressional, gubernatorial and mayoral offices' to encourage schools to apply."

AOL closes Huffington Post deal; its stock hits all-time low | Technology | Los Angeles Times

AOL closes Huffington Post deal; its stock hits all-time low | Technology | Los Angeles Times: "AOL's purchase of the Huffington Post closed Monday, and the same day, AOL's stock sank to its lowest price ever.

As noted by Business Insider's Chart of the Day, shares of AOL fell about 4%, or 79 cents, to $19.26 -- its lowest closing price so far. That was down about one-third from the one-year high it reached in April, Business Insider noted.

The decline in stock price may show a lack of investor confidence in Chief Executive Tim Armstrong's attempt to turn AOL around. Much of that plan is pinned on the combined vision of Armstong and Arianna Huffington, who is becoming president and editor in chief of a new Huffington Post Media Group inside AOL.

AOL, looking to capitalize on the success of the Huffington Post website and brand, is putting the majority of its online publishing properties under Huffington's control."

Milwaukee teachers drop Viagra suit: "The Milwaukee teachers union has dropped a lawsuit seeking to get its taxpayer-funded Viagra back.

The union sued in July 2010 to force the school board to again include the erectile dysfunction drug and similar pills in its health insurance plans.

The union has argued the board's policy of excluding such drugs from the plans discriminates against male employees; the board has countered the 2005 move was meant to save money."

U.S. Treasury Drew Down Its Cash Balance by $81.6 Billion in Just First 4 Days of March | CNSnews.com: "(CNSNews.com) - The U.S. Treasury is depleting its cash at an accelerating pace, drawing down its cash balance by $81.6 billion in the just the first four days of March, leaving the federal government with only $108.9 billion on hand, according to the Daily Treasury Statement released Monday afternoon.

At the beginning of February, the Treasury had $349.1 billion in cash on hand, but spent that down by $158.5 billion during the month, ending February with only $190.6 billion on hand.

Were the government to continue to draw down its cash balance at the $20.4 billion-per-day rate that prevailed in the first four days of March, it would spend its way through its final $108.9 billion in little more than five days."

Obama Would Veto Spending Bill De-Funding Planned Parenthood | LifeNews.com

Obama Would Veto Spending Bill De-Funding Planned Parenthood | LifeNews.com: "President Barack Obama would veto the House-approved long-term spending bill for the federal government that contains the Pence Amendment, a measure that would de-fund the Planned Parenthood abortion business.

Because of that provision and other pro-life riders that stop abortion funding globally and in the District of Columbia, the Washington Times indicates “Obama has issued a veto threat on that bill, saying House Republicans’ cuts are unacceptable.”

“Senate Democrats said the non-spending provisions of the bill — such as restrictions on Planned Parenthood and on Obama administration rules and regulations — will also have to be struck,” the Times continues.

That is the current impasse over the federal spending legislation — where House Republicans have adopted a budget-cutting bill with pro-life provisions and where Senate Democrats have not put forward their own legislation whereby pro-life advocates could either negotiate for the pro-life provisions or try to pass amendments to the Senate bill."

FLEOA Declares President Obama Is Misinformed About U.S. Agents in Mexico - 3/6/11

FLEOA Declares President Obama Is Misinformed About U.S. Agents in Mexico - 3/6/11: "FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ASSOCIATION DECLARES PRESIDENT OBAMA IS MISINFORMED ABOUT U.S. AGENTS IN MEXICO
Washington, DC - Today, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association (FLEOA) announced its opposition to remarks made by President Obama regarding the role and safety of ICE Special Agents assigned to Mexico. After his meeting with Mexico President Calderon on Thursday, President Obama stated, “There are laws in place in Mexico that say our agents should not be armed,” and “We do not carry out law enforcement activities inside of Mexico.” President Obama also stated that the role of ICE Agents was an “advisory” one.

FLEOA vehemently disagrees with both comments. In response to these remarks, FLEOA National President Jon Adler stated, “With all due respect, Mr. President, you have been tragically misinformed on both points.” Contrary to what President Obama asserted, all law enforcement officers assigned to Mexico do perform “law enforcement activities.” This may include conducting field interviews, responding to crime scenes, overseeing training and participating in raids. The fact that they don’t actually handcuff suspects doesn’t diminish their role or the risks they face."

British Health Official: Leave Babies Born at 23 Weeks to Die | LifeNews.com: "An official of the British National Health Service, the governmental socialized medicine program, is drawing gasps from pro-life people worldwide over comments she made saying babies born at 23 weeks of pregnancy should be let to die.

Although unborn children born at that stage of pregnancy, or earlier, can survive, Dr. Daphne Austin said she believes too few babies survive if born prematurely at that point to justify the millions of dollars spent on their medical care.

Austin said, according to a London Daily Mail report, that helping babies survive at that point is only “prolonging their agony” and the money would be better spent to care for the disabled or others who have a better chance of surviving."

GM chart

News coverage of General Motors over the past few weeks has painted an increasingly glowing picture, but here's a dose of reality: GM still has not repaid taxpayers for the bailout and it's looking less and less like taxpayers will ever be made whole.

Unlike much of the media, we actually spent a considerable amount of time looking behind the press releases to see what GM's numbers really say about the health of a company taxpayers now own. This week, we will be sharing with readers a more realistic picture of the company's health. The bottom line: The picture is far less rosy than GM would like you to believe.

GM's Share Price: Will taxpayers ever be made whole?

Remember these promises?

Activist Post: Economy Hit with the Ultimate Smokescreen: Biflation: "You can tell when a Ponzi scheme is approaching its collapse by the increased number of smoke and mirrors needed to cover up the counterfeit foundation of the scheme.

The U.S. government, who already grossly disfigures the real numbers for GDP, unemployment and inflation, is constantly having to twist reality to keep their scheme afloat.

The government recently reported that unemployment numbers reached the lowest point in nearly two years at 8.9%, 'sparking optimism' in the establishment media. Many analysts point to two months in a row of 'job growth' as evidence that the U.S. is well on its way to recovery and it should be good news for job seekers.

Try telling that to a random unemployed commenter who responded to the news with the following:

All lies. Why not just up the ante and say the unemployment rate is 5%? The last job I applied for had 440 applicants, many of whom had Phd's, for the whopping non-living wage figure of 35K.

Even if jobs are added, the question begs--what kind, and how much per hour? $8?"

The terrorist TV channel is already available through something called MHz Networks. And it turns out that the MHz Networks is supported by the American taxpayers at the federal and state levels.

MHz Networks is a division of Commonwealth Public Broadcasting and receives over $2 million a year from federal and state governments. In this case, because Commonwealth is based in Virginia, the culprit is the state of Virginia. However, Governor Robert F. McDonnell has proposed eliminating state funding of public broadcasting by cutting $2 million in fiscal 2012 and $2 million in fiscal 2013. We created 192,000 headline jobs in the February employment report. It’s not enough, but it certainly is welcome news and it is heading in the right direction — although too slowly.

We also learned from the February report that the unemployment rate finally trended below the psychologically important 9 percent mark. This is a very big development, considering the rate was pushing the 10 percent level several months ago."

Friedrich was speaking in the context of a probe by German authorities into last Wednesday's killing of two U.S. airmen at Frankfurt Airport, in which it is believed the 21-year-old Kosovan suspect Arid Uka was a lone operator motivated by radical Islamist beliefs. His comments were a play on words, turning on its head an earlier remark made several months ago by German President Christian Wulff, who said Islam now 'belongs to Germany' because of the 4 million Muslims who live there."

Utah Legislature Passes Immigration Reform Package : NPR: "Utah lawmakers have approved an immigration package that includes an enforcement law reminiscent of Arizona's but tempered with a guest worker program for illegal immigrants.

The immigration measures approved by both chambers Friday night would allow illegal immigrants to get a permit to work in Utah. But they also include a requirement that police check the immigrant status of anyone stopped for a felony or serious misdemeanor.

Supporters say the entire package balances economic needs and compassion, while opponents argue it will likely encourage more illegal immigration.

Lawmakers initially balked at the enforcement measure, HB 497, because of what some viewed as a likely backlash. But sponsor Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem, garnered enough support for passage after amending it to focus on more serious crimes."

Jean-Jacques Jihad » Publications » Family Security Matters: "The one thing that absolutely could not be tolerated was true freedom, the liberty of the individual. For Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the “social compact” would otherwise be “an empty formula.” The irreducible core of the utopia he envisioned, the “undertaking which alone can give force to the rest,” was quite simply this: “Whoever refuses to obey the general will shall be compelled to do so by the whole body.”

Ah, yes, the “general will.” For this, every modern totalitarian movement is indebted to the 18th-century Genevan philosopher who claimed, in The Social Contract, that a man’s compulsory servitude to the state — the embodiment of this general will — “means nothing less than that he will be forced to be free.” Rousseau was what we today call “Orwellian” long before there was an Orwell. “Freedom” was nothing more than submission.

That is why Rousseau so admired Islam."

As Muslims prepare to erect a mega-mosque near the site of the 9/11 atrocities, it is well to reflect that the sort of tolerance, or indifference, that allows them to do so, is far from reciprocated to churches in the Muslim world. I speak not of Islamist attacks against churches—such as the New Year attack in Egypt that killed 21 Christians; or when jihadists stormed a church in Iraq, butchering over 50 Christians; or Christmas Eve attacks on churches in Nigeria and the Philippines. House Oversight Committee | union employees | General Motors bailout | The Daily Caller - Breaking News, Opinion, Research, and Entertainment: "Republican Reps. Mike Turner of Ohio and Dan Burton of Indiana are asking House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, California Republican, to dig into the Obama administration’s decision to cut more than 20,000 private-sector workers’ pensions and eliminate their health and life insurance plans during the General Motors (GM) bailout in 2009.

A spokesman for Issa’s committee told The Daily Caller the committee “remains interested” and is “looking forward” to findings from an ongoing Government Accountability Office investigation, which is expected to come out within the next couple of months. What Turner and Burton are saying happened during the GM bailout is that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner decided to cut pensions for salaried non-union employees at Delphi, a GM spinoff, to expedite GM’s emergence from bankruptcy. The problem with that, according to the congressmen, is that Geithner decided to fully fund the pensions of union workers involved in the process – including workers associated with United Auto Workers, Steelworkers and the IUE-CWA."

Government shutdown | Who cares | The Daily Caller - Breaking News, Opinion, Research, and Entertainment: "According to news reports, Team Obama and House Republicans are at least $50 billion apart in the budget negotiations for FY2011. I’m willing to bet that Team Obama and Senate Democrats won’t agree to even $20 billion in spending cuts.

And that’s a far cry from the GOP’s annualized $100 billion Pledge to America mark, and an even farther cry from the hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts that are necessary over the next five to ten years. As I recall, the Simpson-Bowles deficit commission suggested more than $1 trillion in cuts to the domestic discretionary baseline over ten years. I think the Paul Ryan plan would do the same."

Schumer asks for review of TSA hiring - City & Region - The Buffalo News

Schumer asks for review of TSA hiring - City & Region - The Buffalo News: "Sen. Charles E. Schumer Saturday demanded that the Transportation Security Administration launch an investigation, after a TSA agent was arrested last week and accused of helping drug dealers evade security at Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

If the TSA discovers systematic problems with hiring practices, Schumer said, he would push hard for the agency to adopt tougher standards.

“How was she hired, and why was she trusted with the safety of so many innocent people?” said Schumer, D-N. Y. “TSA owes everyone who flies through Buffalo Niagara International Airport and those who live in Western New York immediate answers.”"

1.) NYT advises Dems to shut down the government and blame it on Republicans — “After letting a highly destructive budget fight fester far too long, the White House finally stepped in late last week to negotiate with the House, which wants to eviscerate nondefense spending,” bemoan the editors of the NYT. “Republicans claim they will not agree on a penny less than $61 billion, which is too little for some more aggressive freshmen. If the Democrats try to compromise on even half that amount, they will be still be doing enormous damage to many programs and threatening a recovery that is starting to show signs of real life.” The paper goes on to call the White House’s pathetic counter-offer of $6.5 billion “more sensible,” and adds, “Democrats are under no obligation to cut more.” If Republicans insist on making meaningful cuts, the paper suggests that Vice Pres. Joe Biden and Senate Democrats should facilitate a government shutdown themselves, and “then let the freshmen explain to an angry public why they closed the government’s doors to score ideological points.” Note to NYT editors: Next time, trying keeping your secret evil plans secret.

Zimbabwe to sell uranium to Iran - Telegraph

Zimbabwe to sell uranium to Iran - Telegraph: "Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, Zimbabwe's foreign minister, said the sanctions – which prohibit member states from providing Iran with raw materials that it could use to make a nuclear weapon – were unfair and hypocritical.

He said that Zimbabwe, which is also the subject of sanctions over human rights abuses perpetrated by President Robert Mugabe's supporters, would benefit economically from the agreement.

A leaked intelligence report suggests Iran will be awarded with exclusive access to Zimbabwe's uranium in return for providing the country with fuel."

Mr Obama wants Megrahi to be tried in the States for putting a bomb on the New York-bound jet that blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988, a crime for which he was convicted by a Scottish court

Cancer-stricken Megrahi has disappeared in Libya where he has been living after being released from jail because he supposedly had only months to live,"

Recall drives could make history - JSOnline

Recall drives could make history - JSOnline: "As improbable as the last three weeks have been in state politics, Wisconsin is about to embark on another wild ride into the political unknown - a series of legislative recall campaigns on a scale the nation has rarely, if ever, seen.

'I don't think there's a precedent for what's going on in Wisconsin,' said Gary Moncrief of Boise State University, an expert on legislative politics. 'I don't think there's ever been a case where pretty much everyone has been subject to a recall attempt at one time on both sides. That's really amazing.'

Formal recall campaigns have now been launched against 16 state senators - eight Republicans and eight Democrats. That's everyone in the 33-member Wisconsin Senate who is legally eligible to be recalled this year."

NewMediaJournal: Federal Funding May Be Done in Two Week Increments

NewMediaJournal: Federal Funding May Be Done in Two Week Increments: "Congress could end up funding the government in two-week increments to avert a shutdown because lawmakers can't agree on a long-term budget plan.

Lawmakers passed a two-week budget on March 4 and are now facing a new deadline, March 18. Yet Republicans and Democrats are no closer to settling on a plan to pay for the remaining six months of the fiscal year, despite intervention by the White House.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), said if no long-term deal is reached by March 18, Republicans are prepared to keep passing two-week funding measures that would cut $2 billion per week. At that rate, Republicans would still be able to achieve their campaign pledge to cut $100 billion from President Obama's proposed 2011 budget, Cantor said."

Democrats attack Republican candidate's children

Democrats attack Republican candidate's children: "In an effort to do my part in rescuing our country from the out-of-control Obama administration, last year I ran for Congress in Oregon's 4th District against 12-term incumbent, far-left Democrat Peter DeFazio, co-founder of the House Progressive Caucus.

Although I won the nominations of the Republican, Independent and Constitution Parties and the endorsement of the Libertarian Party, a massive media smear campaign by DeFazio, paid for with money raised by MoveOn.org and from special interests favored by DeFazio in Washington, resulted in a 54.5 percent to 43.6 percent victory for DeFazio in a race that was expected to be much closer.

Although I had never run for public office before, I immediately announced my candidacy for Congress again in 2012.

However, when you take a stand for what's right, sometimes there is retribution.

On Nov. 4, 2010, as soon as the election results were in and they were sure their candidate had won, faculty administrators at Oregon State University gave new meaning to the term 'political payback.'"

As Islamists gain, Obama pushes Israel into concessions

As Islamists gain, Obama pushes Israel into concessions: "TEL AVIV – As Islamist parties gain momentum throughout the region, President Obama has asked Israel to immediately give the Palestinian Authority more control over cities in the strategic West Bank, according to informed Middle East officials.

The officials said Obama's envoys to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict met in recent days with officials from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office to express the request.

The officials said the U.S. has made a strategic decision to renew a push now for Israel's immediate return to the negotiating table to discuss the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and eastern sections of Jerusalem.

Just yesterday, Netanyahu announced he is interested in jump-starting talks with the Palestinians. He also accused the PA of using the recent unrest in the Middle East as an excuse to avoid talking to Israel."

Resurrecting the Caliphate | FrontPage Magazine

Resurrecting the Caliphate | FrontPage Magazine: "The Islamist forces are enthusiastic about the uprisings throughout the Arab world, knowing they will offer an opportunity to begin gradually recreating an unofficial Caliphate. Oppressive pro-Western governments, nationalist sentiments and secular forces stand in their way, but the Islamists’ organizational capabilities and clerical support give them an advantage. The Muslim Brotherhood suddenly has a chance to rapidly come to power throughout the entire Middle East and have parties and governments able to jointly reshape the region.

Egypt has received the most attention regarding a possible Muslim Brotherhood takeover. A World Public Opinion poll in 2009 showed that 69 percent of Egyptians believe the Brotherhood is genuinely democratic and 64 percent give it a positive rating. Less than one-fourth consider it to be an extremist group. A Pew poll in 2010 found strong support for a judicial system based on Sharia, including 84 percent supporting the execution of apostates. The most recent poll found only 15 percent supported the Brotherhood but it only surveyed Egyptians in Cairo and Alexandria whereas the Islamist support comes from the poorer areas of the country."

NewsReal Blog » The Ten Commandments of Leftist Reporting on Islam » Print: "Thanks to the rise of the internet and social media, people throughout the world can now gain access to far more information than was believed possible just two decades ago. However, the big leftist media conglomerates of old nevertheless retain great power to influence societal attitudes on a large scale…and they do not shy away from using that power to sway public opinion their way. Particularly in “movement media“, we see an endless stream ofradical propaganda that has become valuable as a political mechanism of organizing for the Shadow Party. But these and their compatriots in the so-called “mainstream media” have evolved even further in their role as a propaganda machine in recent years. They have become apologists not only for a secular ideology, but now also for a wholly political religion – Islam. These Islamapologists have many clear lines that they invariably refuse to cross in their reporting on this particular religion; lines that are so unmistakable that we can identify them specifically. They are the “Ten Commandments of Leftist Reporting on Islam.”

And we’re starting with… censorship.

Yet for bringing down Saddam Hussein, the U.S. has been denounced variously for aggression, deception, arrogance and imperialism.

A strange moral inversion, considering that Saddam's evil was an order of magnitude beyond Khadafy's. Khadafy is a capricious killer; Saddam was systematic. Khadafy was too unstable and crazy to begin to match the Baathist apparatus: a comprehensive national system of terror, torture and mass murder, gassing entire villages to create what author Kanan Makiya called a 'Republic of Fear.'"

While the White House slept: Once again, our government was caught off guard by the Middle East: "As Libya's bloody conflict rages on, important lessons for U.S. foreign policy are emerging from the past month's Middle East turmoil. Starting with Tunisia, the Obama administration has seemed repeatedly surprised by anti-regime demonstrations, unsure of the stakes for America and its allies and unprepared conceptually and operationally to deal with the consequences.

In Egypt, there was contradictory, unhelpful White House rhetoric when silence would have been prudent - and in Libya, silence when strong American words (and actions) were amply warranted.

But even presidential rhetoric is only rhetoric. The real test is whether our government is prepared for uncertainty, and how its policies are implemented under stress."

The Fed Distorts The Economy With Inflation | International Forecaster Weekly Bob Chapman The International Forcaster | Economy News | Investing | US Market Information | Gold | Silver | Wall Street Bailouts | Investment Trends | Money Resources | US and Worldwide Politics: "The Federal Reserve tells us we need inflation to overcome the overhang created by debt and its inflationary aspects. The inflation does not create jobs – it just distorts prices upward. We are told by the head of the Fed, Mr. Bernanke, that he can end inflation when he thinks it is necessary. That is not true, because if inflation ends deflation takes command and the economy collapses. There is no finely honed instrument for turning these two opposite effects on and off; thus, inflationary instruments have to be blunt and overused. That means more often than not that inflation is over implemented. This is the opposite of the Fed’s mandate of promoting price stability, full employment and in fact is used to prop up the banking system. Over the past three plus years the Fed has been attempting to assist the banks in getting rid of bad assets and these efforts may last for another fifty years."

Wave of protests now touches nearly all of Arab world | McClatchy: "CAIRO — From North Africa to the Arabian Peninsula, virtually no Arab country remained untouched Friday by the two-month wave of revolts that's overthrown two heads of state and left many other leaders teetering or rolling out pre-emptive reforms.

As fighting raged in Libya over the fate of Moammar Gadhafi, hundreds of thousands of protesters turned out elsewhere to demand greater political freedoms.

In Yemen, government forces killed as many as four protesters. In Iraq, thousands trekked to demonstrations on foot after the government banned vehicular traffic. Even the closed-off kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the largest oil producer in the world, saw modest demonstrations."

Prof. Niall Ferguson Blasts Obama and MSNBC on Egypt « The IUSB Vision Weblog

Niall Ferguson is brilliant and his credentials are second to none. He has no regard for sacred cows or political correctness. This makes sense because an academic should first be a truth teller who makes every effort to avoid putting on rose colored glasses.

Ferguson plays no favorites. He is happy to write for Newsweek, be a regular on MSNBC, and then feels perfectly comfortable telling accurate history and making analysis for Glenn Beck. No matter who Prof. Furguson is in front of he pulls no punches and tells things as they are to the best of his ability. This is exactly the kind of ethical courage and fortitude that every academic should strive for."

Niall Ferguson - WANTED: A Grand Strategy for America

Niall Ferguson - WANTED: A Grand Strategy for America: "“The statesman can only wait and listen until he hears the footsteps of God resounding through events; then he must jump up and grasp the hem of His coat, that is all.” Thus Otto von Bismarck, the great Prussian statesman who united Germany and thereby reshaped Europe’s balance of power nearly a century and a half ago.

Last week, for the second time in his presidency, Barack Obama heard those footsteps, jumped up to grasp a historic opportunity . . . and missed it completely.

In Bismarck’s case it was not so much God’s coattails he caught as the revolutionary wave of mid-19th-century German nationalism. And he did more than catch it; he managed to surf it in a direction of his own choosing. The wave Obama just missed—again—is the revolutionary wave of Middle Eastern democracy. It has surged through the region twice since he was elected: once in Iran in the summer of 2009, the second time right across North Africa, from Tunisia all the way down the Red Sea toYemen. But the swell has been biggest in Egypt, the Middle East’s most populous country."

China's Premier Discusses Economy, Social Stability in National Address

China's Premier Discusses Economy, Social Stability in National Address: "Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao says China's economy is on course for another five years of economic expansion. He also stressed the need to make the economic boom more inclusive by closing the gap between the wealthy and the poor. The Chinese leader laid out his government's economic plan in a state-of-the-union-style address at the opening of the annual National People's Congress.

Amid the pomp inside the cavernous Great Hall of the People in Central Beijing, Premier Wen Jiabao gave a sobering message about the social and economic challenges facing the nation.

Wen says China is on course for another five years of robust growth at around seven percent. But he says inflation and corruption threaten social stability and must be controlled.

Inflation has been a government concern for some time. Millions of ordinary Chinese spend half their income on food and prices are rising.

The nation's inflation rate is currently estimated at nearly five percent and some economists say it has yet to peak, despite three recent interest rate hikes to cool the economy."

‘Birther’ legislation introduced by Sorenson | Iowa Independent: "Legislation that would require anyone running for president to produce a birth certificate and make it available for public inspection was introduced this week by state Sen. Kent Sorenson (R-Indianola), however the bill is considered dead this session.

Friday marked the self-imposed funnel deadline for legislation to clear a committee in order to remain eligible for debate this session. Sorenson, a favorite of evangelical conservatives and the tea party movement, introduced the bill Wednesday, and it was assigned to a subcommittee on Thursday, where it remains.

A poll released last month showed that 51 percent of likely 2012 Republican primary voters said they believe President Barack Obama was not born in the U.S."

Libya crisis sends U.S. gas prices up 33 cents in two weeks - CNN.com

Libya crisis sends U.S. gas prices up 33 cents in two weeks - CNN.com: "(CNN) -- U.S. gasoline prices increased nearly 33 cents in two weeks, the second-biggest two-week jump in the history of the gasoline market, according to a new survey of filling stations.

The latest Lundberg Survey of cities in the continental United States was conducted Friday. It showed the national average for a price of self-serve unleaded gasoline at $3.51, an increase of 32.7 cents from the last survey two weeks earlier, survey publisher Trilby Lundberg said.

The jump was the biggest since a 38-cent hike between August and September 2005. At the time, the price increase was driven by damage caused by Hurricane Katrina."

Michael Moore: Big Fat Union Hypocrite

Michael Moore: Big Fat Union Hypocrite: "With the spotlight on Wisconsin’s union thugs rampaging across the state, one wonders why it took propaganda filmmaker Michael Moore so long to put himself in front of the news cameras to take some of their publicity for himself. But this weekend, Moore finally glommed onto the cameras making himself out to be a great supporter of the union’s efforts in the Badger State. Once again, though, Moore proves to be a hypocrite. It was Moore, after all, that excluded using union workers in one of his recent films. Some supporter of unions!

Filmmaker Moore attend a recent Wisconsin pro-union rally and regaled the crowd with an address saying, “Madison is only the beginning.”

“We’re going to do this together. Don’t give up. Please don’t give up,” Moore told the protesters, who have swarmed the Capitol every day for close to three weeks.

FT.com / Currencies - Traders ‘short’ dollar as currency loses attraction

FT.com / Currencies - Traders ‘short’ dollar as currency loses attraction: "Hedge funds and forex dealers are betting record amounts against the dollar, reflecting a growing belief that the US currency has lost its haven appeal and that eurozone interest rates will soon rise.

As the crisis in the Middle East has worsened, the latest exchange data show that traders are selling “short” the currency. The big US fiscal deficit and concerns about the effect of rising oil prices have been blamed by some for the dollar’s slide."

Figures from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which are often used as a proxy for hedge fund activity, showed that short dollar positions surged from 200,564 contracts in the week ending February 22 to 281,088 on March 1.

This meant that the value of bets against the dollar on the CME rose $11.5bn in the week to March 1 to $39bn, $3bn more than the previous record of $36bn in 2007.

Number of healthcare reform law waivers climbs above 1,000 - The Hill's Healthwatch

Number of healthcare reform law waivers climbs above 1,000 - The Hill's Healthwatch: "The number of temporary healthcare reform waivers granted by the Obama administration to organizations climbed to more than 1,000, according to new numbers disclosed by the Department of Health and Human Services.

HHS posted 126 new waivers on Friday, bringing the total to 1,040 organizations that have been granted a one-year exemption from a new coverage requirement included in the healthcare reform law enacted almost a year ago. Waivers have become a hot-button issue for Republicans, eager to expose any vulnerabilities in the reform law.

In order to avoid disruption in the insurance market, the healthcare overhaul gives HHS the power to grant waivers to firms that cannot meet new annual coverage limits in 2011. The waivers have typically been granted to so-called 'mini-med' plans that offer limited annual coverage — as low as $2,000 — that would fall short of meeting the new annual coverage floor of $750,000 in 2011."

With Threat of Energy Crisis Looming, Analysts Conclude that White House Polices Are Raising Costs, Jeopardizing Jobs | Speaker of the House John Boehner | speaker.gov

With Threat of Energy Crisis Looming, Analysts Conclude that White House Polices Are Raising Costs, Jeopardizing Jobs | Speaker of the House John Boehner | speaker.gov

According to a CNN report this morning, “gas prices jumped four cents overnight, with the average American driver now paying more than $3.40 a gallon,” the highest average since October 2008. The increase in gas prices underscores what economists have been warning for weeks: the United States is on the verge of a looming energy crisis that could stall the already-sluggish economic recovery and cost jobs:

  • The Wall Street Journal: “Oil’s Rise Threatens Economic Growth”: “IEA chief economist Fatih Birol said in an interview that if the price of oil averages $100 a barrel this year, the U.S. would have to spend $385 billion on oil imports—nearly $80 billion more than it did last year. … Such a sharp increase in U.S. import costs would present a ‘serious problem for business and consumer confidence, which the U.S. economy desperately needs for sentiment to improve,’ Mr. Birol said.”
  • Los Angeles Times: “Rising fuel prices could cramp economic recovery”: “From the farm to the factory, businesses are facing higher costs to grow the nation’s food, ship goods and manufacture products at a time when they’re already cautious about hiring new employees or placing big orders. The added burden of sustained fuel price increases could slow the nation’s already sluggish economic growth, analysts said.”

With oil prices already topping $100 a barrel and gas prices continuing to rise, what is President Obama doing to forestall the looming crisis and protect American jobs? Nothing. In fact, President Obama’s energy policies are only contributing to the crisis by hampering domestic energy production - raising costs for families and small businesses, and putting jobs at risk. Here’s what analysts are saying about the job-crushing impact of President Obama’s policies:

  • CEO Steve Forbes: The Obama Administration’s “Lack of Political Will to Drill for Oil and Gas Compromises Our National Security and Jeopardizes Economic Recovery.” “The Obama administration is repeating the mistakes of President Jimmy Carter’s failed energy policies, which marred his term and stigmatized the 1970s. They are leading us straight into another national energy disaster. Key members of the Obama administration believe this friction abroad underscores the need to move away from oil and gas entirely and shift to boutique forms of alternative energy. Their lack of political will to drill for oil and gas compromises our national security and jeopardizes economic recovery.” (Politico, 3/2/11)
  • The Cato Institute’s Richard W. Rahn: “The President is Demanding That Businesses Create More Jobs While at the Same Time Denying Them the Ability to Do So.” “The Obama administration has stopped the new oil-production process in the Gulf of Mexico, even in the face of a court order requiring it to issue permits. The administration, through executive orders, has denied oil and gas producers access to millions of acres where large deposits of oil and gas are known to exist. The administration also is holding up permits for many new power plants, pipelines and industrial plants, all of which are costing Americans jobs and driving businesses to other countries. It is not unnoticed that the president is demanding that businesses create more jobs while at the same time denying them the ability to do so because of his environmental, energy and regulatory policies.” (The Washington Times, 2/28/11)
  • The Hudson Institute’s Diana Furchtgott-Roth: President Obama’s Energy Tax Increases Would Raise Costs for Domestic Producers that “Employ American Workers and Produce Revenues for All Americans.” “Oil is close to $100 a barrel as the Middle East is imploding, and President Obama wants to raise taxes on domestic oil and gas producers. Such taxes would, if approved by Congress, make the country more dependent, not less, on imported oil. … If America is to reduce use of imported fuels, it needs to raise domestic production as well as to conserve. This increases our long-term energy security, rather than harming it. Every single additional barrel of oil produced in America is one barrel fewer that we need to import -- and as we produce more at home, we employ American workers and produce revenues for all Americans.” (The Washington Examiner, 2/24/11)

With 13.9 million Americans still unemployed and economists warning that our economy could take another hit, it is time for President Obama to abandon his job-crushing energy policies and work with Republicans to enact an all-of-the-above energy policy that supports domestic energy production, provides for more clean renewable and alternative fuels, and increases conservation. It’s a plan that will lower energy costs, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and help create new American jobs.
