We face recession without shock absorbers as Berlin loses patience with the eurozone - Telegraph: "This time we face the risk of double-dip recession without shock absorbers. Interest rates are already at or near zero in much of the OECD club. Fiscal deficits are stretched to the limits of safety.

Far from loosening, the US is on track to tighten by 2pc of GDP next year, and Europe by 1pc to 2pc, into the slowdown.

China has already pushed credit to 200pc of GDP. It cannot repeat the trick.

The Anglo-Saxons can print more money, but the gains in asset prices for the rich are offset by losses from fuel and food inflation for the poor. This is a destructive trade-off."

America’s debt downgrade is a damning indictment of President Obama’s Big Government disaster – Telegraph Blogs

America’s debt downgrade is a damning indictment of President Obama’s Big Government disaster – Telegraph Blogs: "The decision by credit agency Standard and Poor’s to downgrade America’s AAA credit rating for the first time in 70 years is a massive blow to the credibility of the Obama administration, and a damning indictment of its handling of the economy. No doubt the White House will pathetically try to blame the Bush Administration, Republicans in Congress, and of course its favourite target, the Tea Party, for the move by S&P. But without a shadow of a doubt, responsibility for the country’s financial mess and staggering levels of debt lie with the current US president and his administration. They have been in charge of running the economy for over 30 months, during which time the United States has witnessed an unprecedented increase in government spending and borrowing."

Christina Romer | Bill Maher | Credit Downgrade | The Daily Caller: "University of California, Berkeley Professor Christina Romer, formerly chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, appeared on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday night.

Romer — who resigned in 2010 after inaccurately predicting that the $800 billion stimulus would lower the unemployment rate — said that the S&P credit downgrade was a sign that the country is “pretty darn fucked.”

“The long run budget situation is abysmal,” Romer said. “And it has been abysmal going back at least a decade. So it was never an immediate emergency. And it is something that we absolutely needed to deal with, but we didn’t need to deal with it today, we didn’t need to deal with it a week ago.”

Maher asked Romer, “How uncontroversial is Keynesian economics?”"

ABC Financial Expert Slapping S&P As 'Suspect' Is Undisclosed Obama Fundraiser | NewsBusters.org: "The predictable MSM reaction to Standard & Poor's downgrading of the US government's credit rating? Kill the messenger, of course. Yesterday, we noted how Jeff Glor at CBS' Early Show parroted the Obama line about the downgrade being 'political.'

Today it was ABC's turn. Good Morning America had on Mellody Hobson, a regular ABC 'financial contributor' and former host of her own ABC financial-advice show. Hobson hit S&P hard, expressing the view that 'everything that they do is suspect.'

There's just one little factoid ABC didn't share with viewers. While presented as a presumably objective financial expert, Chicagoan Hobson in fact is an Obama partisan. Hobson served as a big-time fundraiser during Obama's 2008 presidential campaign and is involved with his 2012 campaign."

No more Moammar? Don't count Gadhafi out yet: "NATO-backed Libyan rebels are showing signs of serious fracture, punctuated by their indiscriminate killing of civilians, and they now face a challenge from the Warfalla and other pro-government tribes who could turn the tide in favor of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, according to Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

The development could prompt a reconsideration by the Western alliance of what should be accomplished in strife-torn Libya.

Two U.S. sources currently in Tripoli told G2Bulletin that Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Kaim, who is part of the embattled Gadhafi regime, told them that the Warfalla tribe – one of the largest in Libya – is being joined by other tribes to fight the rebels because of what is described as indiscriminate killing of civilians by Western alliance-backed troops.

The sources said that Qatari troops, tanks and helicopters 'are openly killing these unarmed tribal members. They have their Qatari tanks in the streets of Benghazi. They are actively shooting on unarmed civilians.'"

A helicopter was shot down today by Afghan insurgents as it was rushing to aid troops in a firefight, killing 30 Americans, including 22 Navy SEALs, most of whom belonged to Team 6, the unit whose members were involved in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, U.S. officials said.

The Chinook helicopter was carrying a quick-reaction force to provide back-up to the troops on the ground in the eastern Afghan province of Wardak, a U.S. official said. After the crash, the forces that were involved in the firefight "broke contact" with the enemy so they could go provide perimeter security for the crash site, the official said.

Lowering the nation’s rating to one notch below AAA, the credit rating company said “political brinkmanship” in the debate over the debt had made the U.S. government’s ability to manage its finances “less stable, less effective and less predictable.” It said the bipartisan agreement reached this week to find at least $2.1 trillion in budget savings “fell short” of what was necessary to tame the nation’s debt over time and predicted that leaders would not be likely to achieve more savings in the future.

“It’s always possible the rating will come back, but we don’t think it’s coming back anytime soon,” said David Beers, head of S&P’s government debt rating unit."

Presidential candidate Barack Obama called for 'hope and change,' but he was deliberately vague on the 'fundamental change' part. In speeches as president both at home and abroad, he appeared to reject American exceptionalism and intimated we have much to learn from Europe, especially its cradle-to-grave welfare state."

Secret Hero of the Middle East » Publications » Family Security Matters: "Over the past week, we’ve seen Egypt’s deposed dictator face charges in a court of law; the tanks of Syria’s dictator killing—but not deterring—unarmed freedom protesters; and ill-armed-but-determined Libyan rebels gnawing their way into the strongholds of the man responsible for more American deaths than any other terrorist but Osama bin Laden. While plenty of problems will plague the Middle East for decades to come, the pace of largely positive change has been swifter than anyone (not least, the Arabs themselves) imagined possible.

For all the dangers and difficulties ahead, there’s real hope in the Middle East for the first time in over a half-century. And the man who made it possible is George W. Bush."

Obama: Extending Unemployment Benefits Will "Help Create Jobs Right Now" | RealClearPolitics: "PRESIDENT: 'So, when Congress gets back in September I want to move quickly on things that will help the economy create jobs right now. Extending the payroll tax credit to put a thousand dollars in the pocket of the average American worker. Extending unemployment insurance to help people get back on their feet. Putting construction workers back to work rebuilding America.

'Those are all steps we can take right now that will make a difference and there is no contradiction between us taking some steps to put people to work right now and getting our long-term fiscal house in order. In fact, the more we grow the easier it will be to ease our deficits.'"

Beneath Jobs Report Surface Lies Some Ugly Truths - CNBC: "Before getting too excited about the modest uptick in net job creation and a slight downward move in the unemployment rate, it’s probably worth a look under the hood.

As is usually the case, there is far more than meets the eye to the Labor Department’s report that the economy added 117,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate fell to 9.1 percent.

Let’s start with the reality that fewer people actually were working in July than in June.

According to a Bureau of Labor Statistics breakdown, there were 139,296,000 people working in July, compared to 139,334,000 the month before, or a drop of 38,000."

The steep drop in equities that wiped out all of the gains for the year coincided with President Obama’s 50th birthday. At a celebration in Chicago on Wednesday night, the president said he is still learning about details of the recession that rocked his administration in the first year."

Most people have an image of the 1930’s and the Great Depression as a time period of monumental job loss, vast family dislocation, widespread famine, and severe uncertainty. The typical head of household toiled daily in order to put bread on the table and keep a roof over their family’s head. Questions about the need for a federal Department of Education have been raised for years.

Something is wrong with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews…. – Glenn Beck: "Is it possible that Chris Matthews has been drunk while hosting his MSNBC show? After all, there are only so many explanations for his horrible and unprofessional habit of slurring nearly every word he says on his TV show! What were some of Matthews’s slurring language? He kept saying “Prez Obama” rather than “President Obama”, “Harbra” instead of “Hardball”, and “conserves” instead of “conservatives”.

“He’s jamming forty words in three seconds,” Stu said.

What could be the source of his slurred speech? Glenn and Pat (jokingly) suggested Matthews could be impaired while on air.

The American Spectator : The Disgrace of Obamanomics: "Last Friday's report on economic growth for the second quarter of 2011 completes the burial of Obamanomics. The economy grew a paltry 1.3% for the quarter, with reported growth for the first quarter reduced from a meager 1.8% to a negligible 0.4%. The economy for the entire year so far has actually grown less than the weak growth we thought we had for the first quarter alone.

The growth for the fourth quarter of 2010 was also reduced to 2.3%, meaning that for the last nine months the economy has grown a minimal 1.5%, barely treading water as the weekend Wall Street Journal described it. For comparison purposes, economic growth during the first seven quarters of the Reagan recovery in the 1980s boomed at an average of 7.1%. Economic growth during the first seven quarters of the Obama non-recovery has now been reduced to an average of 2.6%, barely a third as much."

Tea Party Could ‘Potentially Become a Violent Movement' | CNSnews.com

Tea Party Could ‘Potentially Become a Violent Movement' | CNSnews.com: "(CNSNews.com) – Tea party conservatives are “pursing goals that can’t be achieved,” they are “delusional,” and they belong to “a very angry movement’ that “could, potentially become a violent movement.”

That’s according to a Stanton Peele, a psychologist and addiction expert interviewed by liberal MSNBC host Martin Bashir on Wednesday afternoon.

The Weekly Standard blogged about the interview, as did Newsbusters."

White House budget office raised risk on big solar loan guarantee | iWatch News

White House budget office raised risk on big solar loan guarantee | iWatch News: "The White House budget office raised flags about the first energy loan guarantee awarded under the Obama administration, adding another layer of questions to the taxpayer backed financing now at the center of a House investigation.

In 2009, as the Department of Energy pushed to close the $535 million loan guarantee to California solar panel maker Solyndra Inc., the Office of Management and Budget concluded the financing was a greater risk to taxpayers than did DOE, iWatch News has learned. That higher risk rating, in turn, forced the government to set aside more money in case the company defaults on payments."

Levin and McCain: We have no idea how much debt deal cuts defense | The Cable

Levin and McCain: We have no idea how much debt deal cuts defense | The Cable: "The two heads of the Senate Armed Services Committee told The Cable today that even they have no idea how much the debt ceiling deal will cut from national defense, because the specifics of the cuts are still unknown.

Depending on which reports you read today, the bill to raise the debt ceiling and cut at least $2.1 trillion from the budget over the next decade, is either a huge win for the Pentagon or a dangerous cut to the military budget that will 'sap American military might worldwide.' The Cable reported yesterday that the White House's assertion that the bill puts the nation on track to save $350 billion in defense spending over 10 years was just a guess, considering that the bill doesn't say anything about 'defense' cuts. The bill only sets caps on 'security' spending, which includes Defense, State, USAID, intelligence, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Nuclear Security Administration, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs."

Oprah Winfrey Supports Barack Obama Campaign in 2012 | Video | TheBlaze.com

Oprah Winfrey Supports Barack Obama Campaign in 2012 | Video | TheBlaze.com: "Oprah Winfrey‘s daytime talk show is over, but her adulation for President Obama is far from it.

Winfrey is “happy to be of service” for Obama’s reelection campaign, she said in a statement Wednesday. “I supported Barack Obama in 2008 because I believed then as I do now that he is the right man for the job,” she said.

Back in ‘08, Winfrey’s backing of Obama helped him bring down the most well-known well-oiled campaign machine: Bill and Hillary Clinton. When she first interviewed Obama in a 2004 issue of her magazine “O,” the queen of daytime said, “[W]hen I decided to talk with you (Obama), people around me were like, ‘What’s happened to you?’ I said, ‘I think this is beyond and above politics.’ It feels like something new.”"

Dow’s losing streak now in ninth day - MarketWatch First Take - MarketWatch

Dow’s losing streak now in ninth day - MarketWatch First Take - MarketWatch: "The stock market is poised today to do something it has not done in over 33 years: Decline for nine straight sessions.

The last time the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -4.31% did that, in fact, was Feb. 22, 1978, when Jimmy Carter was president and the country was struggling to come to grips with a period of anemic economic growth and high inflation.

Isn’t it comforting to know that we’ve made such progress over the last three decades?

Actually, about the only thing that is comforting in the historical data on Dow losing streaks is that many of them have occurred near major bear-market bottoms."

Global stock sell-off accelerates - FT.com

Global stock sell-off accelerates - FT.com: "The S&P 500 index and US Treasuy yields experienced their biggest decline since the financial crisis, as global investors shunned risk after central bankers failed to stem fears of rapidly slowing growth.

The day’s move was kicked off by a steep fall in the yen after Tokyo intervened to weaken the currency in the latest move by a central bank to combat the impact of market turmoil. It was accelerated by news that the European Central Bank would return to the market to buy bonds issued by troubled debtor nations."
