Kerry: U.S. abstained on U.N. vote to save two-state solution in Mideast: Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday defended a controversial U.S. decision to abstain on a United Nations vote that condemned Israeli settlements on land claimed by Palestinians, saying it was intended to preserve a two-state solution for peace in the region.

"That is what we are trying to preserve for our sake and (Israel's)," Kerry said. "We reject the criticism that this vote abandons Israel."
