SaneWorks.us - Society of Americans for National Existence , Relearning the Art of War: "Contrary to the hopes of many, the election of Barack Obama as president of the United States will not signal the end of war, either for the world in general, or for the United States in particular. As the historians Will and Ariel Durant noted in their book, The Lessons of History, war is a constant of history. According to the Durants’ calculations, in over three thousand years of recorded history, only eight percent of man’s time on earth has been war free. Therefore, since peace is an aberration of the human condition, why are educated people so reluctant to study war and acknowledge war’s reality? In truth, studying war is like studying earthquakes, the learning is undertaken to understand subterranean movements because they are certain to occur, not because the students celebrate them. Abhorrence of the carnage of battle should not inhibit its study. Generals as well as pacifists have a vested interest in understanding the dynamic of war."
