Juan Ramon De Leon is accused of an aggravated robbery in an apartment about 4:37 a.m. Tuesday at 3428 N. Alamo Road. De Leon is suspected of several other home invasions in the area.
'This guy is a criminal illegal immigrant and he got kicked out of the country once before,' Treviño said. 'We are going to make sure he is prosecuted successfully and we're going to track him in the system to make sure immigration (authorities) get a hold of him and actually deport him.'
Justice of the Peace Charlie Espinoza arraigned De Leon on one count of aggravated robbery Monday at the Hidalgo County Jail. He set De Leon's bond at $100,000.
De Leon, 31, has an extensive criminal record, including seven aggravated robbery charges, three weapon arrests and one count of terroristic threat, authorities said. He had previously been deported, but since returned to the area, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño said.
Records show De Leon has two other aggravated robbery cases pending in Hidalgo County District Court.
Should De Leon post bond for his latest charge, authorities have placed a hold so he would be released to federal custody pending immigration charges, Treviño said.
"That almost assures he's going to stay in jail until he goes to trial," the sheriff said.
Authorities said De Leon is a Mexican national who resided illegally in the Rio Grande Valley. He is set to be turned over to federal authorities to be deported following his criminal court cases.
