May 28 (Bloomberg) -- Entergy Corp. said the 1,068-megawatt Indian Point 3 nuclear-power plant in New York shut down automatically at 6:40 a.m. today after an increase in water levels in one of four steam generators.
There was no release of radioactivity or threat to the safety of workers or the public, the company said in an e-mailed statement.
The trip occurred as operators were shutting down one of the unit’s two main boiler feed pumps to investigate a vibration in the pump, the company said. The pumps are located in a non- radioactive area of the plant and provide water to the steam generators.
Workers are investigating both the vibration and increase in water levels in the steam generator, Jerry Nappi, the plant spokesman, said in a telephone interview.
“All equipment performed as designed in response to the shutdown,” the company said. “The cause of the shutdown is being investigated.”
Indian Point 2, which can supply 1,036 megawatts to the grid, is operating at full capacity, according to the spokesman.
The plant is 40 miles (64 kilometers) north of New York City.
