26-May-2009

Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka emphasises all separatist movements that support terrorism will be defeated as the LTTE has been eliminated. General Fonseka says a long-term programme will be implemented with regard this under the supervision of the president. He disclosed that army is keeping a closer eye about those movements and has taken measures to further strengthen the security of the country. Therefore, he pledged that no opportunity would be left for terrorists to recommence their activities in the country. Similarly the army will also be further strengthened. The LTTE has no chance to regroup as the army have totally destroyed the leadership of the LTTE. All the high-rankers and the low-rankers were killed by the army. More than 900 LTTE cadres had been killed from the attacks of the army during the last week. Out of that more than 600 bodies were recovered. Speaking further the army commander stated if the person called Kumaran Padmanathan who is engaged in money laundering activities for the terrorists is trying to regroup the LTTE acting as a leader; the army is ready to deal with him also. The LTTE was formulated due to certain commitments made by its leader and several others. However, the army commander points out a person who is spending a luxurious life and living abroad can not make that commitment. The army achieved those victories by making greater commitments to fulfil the task that was given. The president gave the leadership of the army to general Fonseka 12 days before his retirement. However, the army commander disclosed he used new war strategies to counter terrorists’ attacks and appointing suitable persons for the suitable positions regrouping the army. The political leadership provided by the president and the guidance given by the secretary of defence also played a crucial role in those victories. Army had no common strategy to counter terrorism in the past. Limited military operations did not help to fulfil the expected objectives. However, the recent humanitarian operation was carried out after identifying the capacities of the terrorist and by implementing certain strategies to counter them. The army commander further pointed out humanitarian operations of the army became a continuous Tsunami that could not be faced by the LTTE and resulting wiping out them from our beloved motherland.
