John McCain: President Obama not showing 'leadership' - Andy Barr - POLITICO.com
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) criticized President Barack Obama Wednesday for failing to take a strong leadership role in voicing opposition to the election results in Iran.
“I do not believe that the president is taking the leadership that is incumbent upon an American president, which we have throughout modern history, and that is to advocate for human rights and freedom, and free elections are one of those fundamentals,” McCain said during an interview on CNN.
McCain said the president “obviously doesn’t agree” that Iranians have the right to protest the election results as a “fundamental principle.”
“We are seeking, as we have throughout the world, a free and fair election. This is obviously one that is corrupted,” the Republican senator said.
Obama said Tuesday that it would not be productive for the United States
to be seen as “meddling in Iranian elections,” but McCain insisted that showing support for the protesters would not qualify as interfering in Iran.
“We're not meddling in any country's affairs when we call for free and fair elections,” McCain said.
“It’s not a matter of taking a side of the opposition,” he said. “It is a matter of trying to help the Iranian people achieve what is a basic fundamental human right, and that is a right to choose their own leaders and choose their own government.”
