Welcome to the Airport for Nobody - ABC News
You've heard of the Bridge to Nowhere. You might call this the Airport for Nobody.
What does this small airport have?
It has a 7 million dollar air traffic control center, a 14 million dollar hanger and an 18 million dollar runway!
What it really needs is passengers though.
The daily average of passengers is 20.
It does have 3 flights a day, all to Washington D.C. .. but if you take the plane to Washington, you can always get a seat (the planes are mostly empty naturally) and pay only half price, the other half is paid by the government. About $100.00 per flight.
Of course you can rent a car there, except that it is so infrequent that the car rentals do any business they do not have persons located in the airport to rent cars. Someone has to come from a neighboring center miles away to rent you a car.
Congressman John Murtha has secured about $150 million dollars for his named airport over the past 10 years but really hit the jackpot with his congressional clout this year. The stimulus package, just gave the Airport another $800,000.00 in stimulus money to pave an alternate runway that will get no use.
Congressman John Murtha is making sure that the people in his congressional district are very happy with him at all times. Too bad the rest of the country is suffering for it.
The John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport has an impressive $18 million runway made of reinforced concrete that's big enough to land any airplane in North America. The airport also has a $7 million air traffic control tower, a $14 million hanger and $8 million radar. Most of the time, the only thing the airport doesn't have is airplanes.
