Washington, Jul 6 - In a preview of what Americans can expect from Democrats during the upcoming health care debate, on Fox News Sunday yesterday House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) doubled-down on their insistence on a government takeover – which they call a “public option” – as part of the “reform” package the House is poised to consider later this month:
“We think there’s going to be a public option. Yes, we think we need that.” |
A new independent study highlighted today by Ways & Means Committee Republicans shows that the consequences of a government takeover will be even more severe than first thought. The study – conducted by the Lewin Group – found that under the Democrats’ government takeover, a whopping 114 million Americans would be forced out of their current private health coverage, including more than 106 million Americans who currently have employer-provided health care. That means the House Democrats’ health care “reform” bill will force two out of every three Americans off of their current plans.
What’s more, the Democrats’ government takeover will force health care costs higher than ever. According to Ways & Means Committee Republicans, “The Lewin Groups estimates the Democrats’ government-run plan will significantly underpay health care providers, generally compensating them at rates 20-30% below what private health plans would pay for the same services. As a result, physicians and hospitals would be forced to charge those with private insurance more in order to offset the losses they experience under the Democrats’ government-run plan.”
House GOP Leader John Boehner (R-OH) noted in a Bloomberg News story today that a government takeover will be particularly harsh on middle-class families:
“House Minority Leader John Boehner, 59, said the middle class ‘will take it on the chin’ under Obama’s public option, saying it would result in rationing of care and higher taxes.”
“‘The wealthy will always be able to get the care they need, and most low-income Americans already get government assistance, so Democrats are putting a bulls-eye on the backs of the middle class,’ said Boehner.” |
House Republicans believe there’s a better way: one that lets Americans who like their plans keep them and one that ensures that patients and doctors – not government bureaucrats – stay in charge of critical, personal medical decisions. That’s why the House GOP has outlined a proposal to reduce costs, expand access, and increase the quality of care in a way Americans can afford – without new taxes, costly mandates, or a government takeover.
