Just who delivered baby Barack Obama?
Despite an in-depth search, the name of any physician or medical attendant who might have helped deliver the baby Barack Obama at Honolulu's Kapi'olani Hospital
in 1961 remains shrouded in mystery.

The White House, despite repeated requests from WND last week, failed to provide any details on President Obama's birth, including the name of the attending physician. It also ignored a request that it release Obama's long-form birth certificate or obtain from the president the required permission for official medical records on his birth to be released by the hospitals and government agencies that may possess such information.

The certification of live birth short-form document Obama's presidential campaign produced during the 2008 election fails to provide any birth details, mentioning neither the hospital where the president was allegedly born nor the physician who attended the birth.


A thorough search of Obama's campaign websites, White House websites and the voluminous Internet discussion devoted to his birth also failed to produce any information regarding the attending physician.

As WND documented last week, the White House has dropped statements by the president's family and other spokesmen claiming he was born in Queens Medical Center, instead asserting the president was born at Kapi'olani Medical Center.

The decision by the White House to side with the contention that Obama was born at Kapi'olani instead of Queens resulted in the scrubbing of websites that previously identified Queens as the hospital of the president's birth.

After a series of reports last week, WND was able to document that several major Internet sites the senator's campaign and the White House had previously presented as authoritative, including Snopes.com, have now replaced their previous designation of Queens Medical Center as the president's birth hospital with Kapi'olani.

WND also reported that the Honolulu hospital, which for nearly six months proudly declared Obama was born at its facility and used that claim as a major fund-raising tool, is now engaged in an active cover-up, hiding a White House letter announcing his alleged birth there and refusing to confirm such a letter even exists.

Barack Obama states in this purported letter from him on what appears to be White House stationery that he was born at the Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu. The letter was posted by the medical center for nearly six months on its website before electronically hidden once WND publicized it. The hospital now refuses to confirm that a real document even exists.

Within an hour of WND's report, the image, which also featured no presidential or White House seal, vanished from view on the hospital's page celebrating its 100th anniversary.

To follow up this story, WND contacted Kapi'olani Medical Center to see if it could determine the name of the physician who attended the president's birth.

Specifically, WND requested from Kapi'olani Medical Center spokeswoman Kristi Watanabe whether the hospital could determine from records how many babies were delivered at the hospital in 1961 and whether WND could obtain a list of the physicians affiliated with the hospital in 1961.

The goal was to see if any of the physicians working at the hospital in 1961 could be contacted today to see if they remembered who served as the attendant physician at Obama's birth.

WND was unable to obtain any of the records requested from the hospital.

WND did manage to locate one physician, Calvin Sia, M.D., a Honolulu pediatrician for more than 40 years at Kauikeolani Children's Hospital and Kapi'olani Medical Center, who began at Kapi'olani in 1958 and was there in 1961.

Although Sia said he had no idea which doctor at Kapi'olani was the attending physician at Obama's birth, he expressed his belief Obama was born at the hospital.

According to the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare's records in Vital Statistics of the United States, 1961, a total of 2,022 white babies and 6,246 non-white babies were born in Honolulu that year in a hospital attended by a physician.

At that time, the U.S. government maintained only "white" and "non-white" classifications in population statistics.

Given the way the U.S. government conducted population studies in 1961, Hawaiian babies would most likely have been included in the "non-white" category, with the likelihood that babies born to parents of mixed racial heritage may also have been categorized as "non-white."

In 1961, the two hospitals delivering the vast majority of babies in Honolulu were at that time Kapi'olani Women and Children's Hospital and Queens Hospital.

Vital statistics maintained by the U.S. government in 1961 did not record or tabulate the number of babies born at specific hospitals.

The birth of each baby at a hospital in Hawaii in 1961 generated a long-form birth certificate signed by the attending physician and specifying all relevant information about the birth, including the baby's name, parents' names, the hospital, and the weight of the baby, his race and the time of birth.

In his autobiography, "Dreams from My Father," Obama says he found his birth certificate as a child, but he didn't describe what information it contained.

To date, Obama has not revealed his original long-form, hospital-generated "certificate of live birth" that includes details such as the name of the medical facility and the doctor who delivered him.

Here is an actual Hawaii birth certificate from 1963 (the same era as Obama's birth), which while redacted includes detailed information documenting a birth, including the name of the birth hospital and the attending physician. Beneath it is the short-form "Certification of Live Birth" offered by President Obama as proof of his Hawaiian birth. It is possible to have been born outside of Hawaii and still obtain the latter form, but not the former:

WND has reported on dozens of legal challenges to Obama's status as a "natural born citizen." The Constitution, Article 2, Section 1, states, "No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President."

Some of the lawsuits question whether he was actually born in Hawaii, as he insists. If he was born out of the country, Obama's American mother, the suits contend, was too young at the time of his birth to confer American citizenship to her son under the law at the time.

Other challenges have focused on Obama's citizenship through his father, a Kenyan subject to the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom at the time of his birth, thus making him a dual citizen. The cases contend the framers of the Constitution excluded dual citizens from qualifying as natural born.

Complicating the situation is Obama's decision to spend sums estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars to avoid releasing a state birth certificate that would put to rest all of the questions.

Among the cases have been several from Democrat Philip Berg, who has alleged that not only is Obama ineligible to be president, he was unqualified to be the senator from Illinois and should be prosecuted under the False Claims Act.

The key question in the dispute also is being raised on billboards nationwide.

The billboard campaign follows an ongoing petition campaign launched several months ago by WND Editor and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Farah.

They are intended to raise public awareness of the fact that Obama has never released the standard "long-form" birth certificate that would show which hospital he was born in, the attending physician and establish that he truly was born in Hawaii, as his autobiography maintains.
