Union Refuses To Leave Firehouses Unmanned - Boston News Story - WCVB Boston

BOSTON -- The Boston Firefighters Union is standing its ground, refusing to leave firehouses that the city wants to close when staffing is short.

NewsCenter 5's Sean Kelly reported that the fire union held a rally Wednesday, criticizing the temporary closures that they say puts lives at risks.

Boston Fire Department Chief Ronald Keating said that the brownout plan is a safe alternative to layoffs. But firefighters joined with fire victims who were saved by firefighters to say the closures put lives at risk.

"Thank God I am here to say they can't close these places. It is just not right," said Peter Walsh, who was recently rescued by a firefighter.

"This is outrageous. The people of Boston deserve better from their mayor. I took an oath to protect this city. They mayor took an oath to protect the city," said Ed Kelly, of the Boston Firefighters Union.

"These companies are on a rotating basis. The division commanders will take into consideration traffic and the density of the neighborhood, what is going on in the neighborhood at a certain time, what the weather is and also how many men are available and what the response times to these neighborhoods are," Keating said.

The brownouts are temporary closures. The union has offered to volunteer workers at the stations were there are brownouts.
