Congress gets lowest rating in 24 years - Andy Barr - POLITICO.com: "The number of Americans who view Congress favorably has dipped to a 24-year low, according to a new Pew Research Center for the People and the Press poll released Wednesday.

Only 37 percent of those surveyed held a favorable view of Congress, down 13 percentage points since April, while 52 percent held an unfavorable view.

The nationwide telephone survey of 2,003 adults was conducted Aug. 20 to 27, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

Looking forward to the congressional races next year, the Pew Center found Republicans and Democrats running even when those polled were asked which party’s candidate they would vote for if the election were held today. Forty-five percent said they would vote for a Democratic candidate, while 44 percent said they would support a Republican in the midterm elections.

In September 2005 Pew poll, 14 months ahead of the 2006 Democratic takeover of the House and Senate, 52 percent said they would vote for a Democratic candidate, compared to 40 percent who said they would chose a Republican.

Additionally, Democrats were found to have lost ground with voters on a number of key issues."
