Investors.com - Let's Get Serious: "War On Terror: With the abrupt withdrawal of President Hamid Karzai's main opponent, the debate over Afghanistan's election is suddenly moot. Will this put an end to U.S. dithering?
A shift in U.S. approach in the strategically important country had been put on hold pending the election's outcome. President Karzai was due to meet former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah in a runoff this week, pushed by the U.S. and its NATO allies. But on Sunday, Abdullah bowed out, saying the process was unfair and the probability of fraud too high.
It didn't take long for Afghanistan's seven-member Independent Election Commission to declare Karzai the victor because, as its spokesman said, 'he was the winner of the first round (of voting) and the only candidate in the second round.'
With that, Karzai gets a second five-year term, and Afghanistan presumably gets a little political stability. Also presumably, the U.S. has a green light to move forward with a new strategy.
As David Axelrod, a top adviser to President Obama, put it: 'Every poll that had been taken there suggested that he (Abdullah) was likely to be defeated anyway, so we are going to deal with the government that is there.'"
