Author: GOP's 'fake' conservatives a liability (OneNewsNow.com): "An author and former member of President Ronald Reagan's staff says there's no guarantee the Republican Party will regain control of the House or Senate this fall, particularly because it is full of what he calls 'fake conservatives.'

Tom Pauken, a member on Reagan's transition team and White House staff, who later became chairman of the Republican Party of Texas, recently wrote Bringing America Home: How America Lost Her Way and How We Can Find Our Way Back. He feels the GOP veered away from Reagan conservatism.

'We got away from our conservative founding principles, which were so successful during the Reagan era of American politics,' Pauken laments. 'And unfortunately, the Bush administration squandered the political capital the Goldwater-Reagan conservatives took more than three decades to build, and [it] set us up for the most liberal regime in American history.'

The former White House staff member insists Republicans do not have to reinvent conservatism, they just need to return to it.

'We've got to move toward decentralization and get power and the money returned to the states and the local communities and let them make the determination on how to spend that money on important domestic issues, rather than people having to go to Washington hat-in-hand,' he contends.

Pauken adds, though, that there is still hope for disillusioned conservatives."
