Deputy Brian L. Mahaffey was shot and killed as he and other deputies attempted to serve a warrant at a residence on Sandhill Drive.
Shots were exchanged between the deputies and suspect when several of the deputies were inside the home. Deputy Mahaffey was struck by one round below his vest. The suspect, who was wanted for rape, aggravated assault, and kidnapping, was also shot and killed.
Deputy Mahaffey had celebrated his 28th birthday the previous day. He is survived by his wife and two young children.
