Fact Check: No GOP coup of Social Security | jacksonville.com: "Times-Union readers want to know:

President Barack Obama said in his Aug. 14 weekly address that the Republican leaders want to privatize Social Security if they regain control of Congress and that he 'will fight with everything I've got to stop those who would gamble your Social Security on Wall Street.' Would the GOP really do this?


Those comments came as part of an overall message honoring Social Security's 75th anniversary.

But the president was being more political than factual.

It's simply not true that Republican congressional leaders are pushing for privatization - transferring the operation of the Social Security system from the government to the private sector.

A spokesman for Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky confirmed that with FactCheck.org, a nonpartisan fact-finding project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, and PolitiFact.com, a Pulitzer Prize-winning fact-finding project of The St. Petersburg Times.
