He described El-Gamal as "very religious," saying he bought the building near Ground Zero because, "It was a very good deal...He just bought it because the building was available and he has the funds. I am 100% sure that he didn't know that it going to raise some issues, some sensibilities were going to be hurt because of this whole thing. It was not his intention at the beginning."
He said El-Gamal "is a real estate agent. He knows where the pockets are available. He did his research. He found that building. It's a nice building. He has the money and he bought it. That's it, and it's a fundamental right."
El-Gamal did not respond to our request for an interview, but he has previously told Fox News that he has no intention of abandoning the project and denied reports that he wants to move it to another location, as suggested by some, including New York Governor David Paterson.
