David L. Mejias, a domestic violence lawyer and former Democratic congressional candidate who's now running for a New York State Senate seat, faces menacing, stalking and reckless endangerment charges stemming from an incident Thursday with an ex-girlfriend.Mejias, who says he's innocent, also has a history of contributing to prominent Democrats in Congress, including two former presidential candidates: now-Secretary of State Hillary Clintonand Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee.
Other recipients of the $4,000 in federal-level campaign donations the Center for Responsive Politics identifies Mejias as having made since 2000 are Reps. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) and Timothy Bishop (D-N.Y.), as well as former 2000 Democratic congressional candidate David Bishop. A full accounting:
Mejias served as a Nassau (N.Y.) County legislator from 2003 to 2009.
