Okay, We Lied « Frank Miniter: The Obama administration admits they misled Congress about Operation Fast and Furious. Attorney General Eric Holder’s U.S. Justice Department has spent almost a year denying that guns were intentionally allowed to “walk” into Mexico. But now, in a document dump 1,400-pages deep on Friday December 2, the White House revealed parts of its cover-up and its lies. The scandal erupted late last year, after at least two F&F weapons were found at the southern Arizona scene of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry’s murder. Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA), the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, asked Holder for an explanation.

The response was a February 4 letter from assistant AG Ron Weich. He said, “The allegation … that ATF ‘sanctioned’ or otherwise knowingly allowed the sale of assault weapons … is false.” The ATF, Weich went on, “makes every effort to interdict weapons that have been purchased illegally and prevent their transportation to Mexico.”

Now that letter has been withdrawn. “Facts have come to light during the course of this investigation that indicate the Feb. 4 letter contains inaccuracies,” wrote deputy attorney general James Cole.
