A minor attack on N.Y.’s taxes - NY Daily News: At the rollout of his Tax Free New York program last week, Gov. Cuomo called it a big, bold step in the tradition of the Erie Canal.
Please. In the early 1800s, then-Gov. DeWitt Clinton managed to dig a 500-mile ditch through near-wilderness without so much as a steam shovel, and transformed the economy of a continent.
A new package of tax breaks to corporations — even the extremely generous ones Cuomo is proposing — hardly stacks up.
Which is not to say that Cuomo’s idea won’t work on its own terms — as a way to entice high-tech startups and other businesses to come to New York, or at least to keep the ones we have from fleeing.
