Capitol Confidential » Bishops concerned about SAFE’s mental health reporting provisions: New York’s Catholic bishops supported the year-old SAFE Act gun control law, but are worried the more stringent reporting standard it requires for mental health professionals will chase people away from seeking help.
The old standard required mental health professionals to report an individual who posed an “imminent threat” to themselves or others. The SAFE Act, however, requires reporting if a patient “is likely to engage in conduct that would result in serious harm to self or others.”
