Common Core Math Problem: How to Subtract 293 from 568 in Just 10 Steps! (With Picture) | PUNDIT PRESS: Imagine a teacher asks you to solve this question: 568-293. Depending on your age you might do one of three things.

First, you might change 293 into 300, then subtract 568-300, to get 268. Because you added seven to 293 to get 300, you’d add them to 268, to get the correct answer of 275. Very simple. Three quick steps that everyone can understand.

Second, you might do long subtraction. 8 minus 3 is 5, which will be the last number in the answer. You cannot subtract 9 from 6, so you would borrow 1 from the 5, to do 16-9, which would get you 7, the second number. Then it’s as simple as 4-2, which is two. Put all the number together, and you get 275. Longer than the first, but still only four or five steps.

Third, you might use the new common core was to subtract, which is much simpler, with only… 10 steps.
