Attorney general says racial equality threatened in subtle ways - Yahoo News

Attorney general says racial equality threatened in subtle ways - Yahoo News: Attorney General Eric Holder said on Saturday while public utterances of bigotry are roundly condemned in the United States racial discrimination persists in more subtle ways.

Speaking on the 60th anniversary of a landmark Supreme Court ruling outlawing segregation in public schools, Holder said that public outrage over recent instances of bigoted remarks by well-known people did not mean the struggle for civil rights is over.

'We're At Greater Risk': Q. & A. with General Keith Alexander : The New Yorker

'We're At Greater Risk': Q. & A. with General Keith Alexander : The New Yorker: Since Edward Snowden’s revelations about government surveillence, we know more about how the National Security Agency has been interpreting Section 215 of the Patriot Act and Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. We’ve learned some new words —“bulk metadata,” “selector,” “reasonable articulable suspicion,” “emphatic-access restriction”—but we don’t really know how much of this works in practice.

The intelligence community isn’t used to explaining itself in public, but over the past few months, with much prodding by Congress and the press, it has taken some small, tentative steps. Last week, I spent an hour with General Keith B. Alexander, who retired in March after eight years as the director of the N.S.A. The forces pushing for omnivorous data collection are larger than any one person, but General Alexander’s role has been significant. We met on Wednesday morning, in the conference room of a public-relations firm in the Flatiron District. He is a tall man with a firm handshake and steady eyes who speaks rapidly and directly.

Here are excerpts from the interview.

Wheeler has managed to forward his proposal to kill net neutrality in a country where almost everybody wants net neutrality. Disturbing Video Shows 8-Year-Old Students Parroting Lines About ‘White Privilege’ | Video | TheBlaze.com: Educators at the 15th annual White Privilege Conference in Madison, Wisconsin made no secret of their plans to begin targeting younger students with their message of “social justice.”

In a workshop called “Examining White Privilege and Building Foundations for Social Justice Thinking in the Elementary Classroom,” educators Rosemary Colt and Diana Reeves were caught on video by conservative news outlet Progressives Today speaking about how teachers can “insert social justice, anti-racist information” into their lessons that “even little kids” can understand.

One of the most alarming parts of the conference was when 8-year-olds began parroting things like, “White privilege is something that white people have, meaning they have an advantage in a lot of things, and they can get a job more easily.”

This School Just Shut Down First-Grader's Talent Show Performance For Being...Racist: There seem to be fewer and fewer activities Americans can take part in that will not somehow result in accusations of racial discrimination. As one North Dakota elementary school demonstrated, such allegations are not reserved for adults.

After one parent of a Bennett Elementary School student complained, administrators decided to cancel a planned performance of the classic Village People song “YMCA.”

“I’m not in a position to do anything for these educators,” mother Elaine Bolman said; “and hopefully those people that are can make the right choices so all students of any culture and race won’t feel singled out or like their race is being stereotyped against.”

This 17-Year-Old Just Won A Primary In West Virginia And The Reason Why Is Awesome

This 17-Year-Old Just Won A Primary In West Virginia And The Reason Why Is Awesome: Many within the GOP recognize a need for the party to attract not only younger voters, but younger elected representatives. The perception that Republicans are primarily older Americans is an issue that has plagued party leaders for years.

If West Virginia teen Saira Blair is any indication, though, the future could be very bright for up-and-coming conservative candidates. At just 17 years old, politicians rarely come any younger than the upbeat young woman who just successfully beat incumbent state Delegate Larry Klump in her state’s recent primary election.

A successful campaign in the general election would make her West Virginia’s youngest legislator ever.

It is not just her age that sets her apart from other prospective representatives across America. Not only did she promise to keep her campaign completely positive; her basic platform outlines the issues she supports – pro-life, pro-gun, pro-family, pro-business, pro-jobs – rather than focusing on what she opposes.

UPDATE: No discipline for Dubuque student suspended after BB gun - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

UPDATE: No discipline for Dubuque student suspended after BB gun - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings: The Dubuque Senior High School student suspended Wednesday for having an exposed BB gun lying in a car parked off, but near, school campus will not face disciplinary action, the district says.

On Friday, Dubuque Community School District Director of School and Community Relations Mike Cyze said following the district's investigation into the incident, officials will not discipline the student. Cyze said the one-day suspension that happened on Wednesday was never a disciplinary action; that's just standard procedure during an investigation. Nothing - not even the suspension - will go on the student's permanent record.

On Wednesday, the parent noticed what appeared to be a gun in a students car parked off campus. The parent called police who responded and confiscated what turned out to be a BB gun. The student was then suspended for the day while the district investigated.

Since reporting the story many have questioned why the extreme measures if the BB gun was parked in a car off school property. In an interview with KWWL, Lt. Scott Baxter with the Dubuque Police Department said he stands by the departments decisions.

Speaking truth to power in this manner almost always produces harsh reactions, often when you least expect them.

This is what happened when Caleb Bonham asked George Mason University students and teachers to solve the simple equation above:

Comedian Louis C.K. made headlines recently with his Tweets about Common Core. He brought the conversation into the mainstream arena after stating that his daughters used to like math, but Common Core curriculum made them cry. It's not the first instance of a child crying during homework, as you might imagine.

Did you know that the major college tests like the SAT are now aligned with Common Core?

But how can this be when students now entering college have not even had a Common Core education?

"That's just too bad" is the general response for their inevitable failure.

If there is anything you watch this week, please let it be this video with Dr. Duke Pesta. There is also testimony from a psychotherapist towards the end, explaining how her office suddenly exploded with children and teens under post traumatic stress from Common Core and standardized tests.

“As the federal government and state payment systems continue to ratchet down on what they pay us and our costs go up, we have to look for opportunities to create cost efficiencies,” Ritz said. “And one way you do that is you reduce your management costs. So if we have a department that has a director and a manager and two supervisors for let’s say 75 staff, we may remove one of those positions to what we say are the layers of management.”

States Face Overwhelming Reality of Obamacare Medicaid Expansion

States Face Overwhelming Reality of Obamacare Medicaid Expansion: The Medicaid news is not good.

Lots of people signing up? Yes. Is that a good thing? No – it’s bad for poor Americans who need health insurance and bad for taxpayers everywhere.

Yesterday, Indiana’s Mike Pence (R) became the latest governor to move toward expanding his state’s Medicaid program with new federal funding allocated by Obamacare.

Pence is trying to advance some consumer-driven reforms, but he will likely end up with more than he bargained for. Heritage expert Nina Owcharenko warns, “As with most new government programs, original estimates are likely not the true full cost.”

Agent Who Killed Tsarnaev Pal During Grilling had Brutal, Corrupt History | This Can't Be Happening!: Almost a year after an FBI agent shot and killed, under suspicious circumstances, a crucial witness in the Boston Marathon bombing case during what initially appeared to be a botched midnight interrogation in an Orlando apartment, serious questions are being raised about the FBI agent who fired seven shots into Chechen immigrant Ibragim Todashev last May 22, and about what the FBI is really up to on this case.

Two investigations, one by the FBI itself and one by the Florida Attorney General’s office, exonerated the FBI in the shooting death, claiming the agent, never identified, had been acting in self-defense, when Todashev allegedly ran at him with a raised broom handle.

New IRS Revelations – and the Obama Administration Behind the Scenes

New IRS Revelations – and the Obama Administration Behind the Scenes: Could the IRS do anything to make itself more unpopular? Apparently, things are far from over with the agency’s targeting of conservative political groups.

Emails obtained by Judicial Watch and released yesterday indicate that the Obama administration lied when it tried to pin the scandal on IRS employees in an Ohio branch office. In fact, the Washington, D.C., office of the IRS was coordinating with the employees to hold up tea party groups’ applications for nonprofit status and subject them to extra scrutiny.

At the heart of the controversy is Lois Lerner, who was head of the division that approved nonprofit applications at the time.

Unfit for Office | National Review Online

Unfit for Office | National Review Online: The recent escalating arguments over whether there should be further congressional hearings on Benghazi are troubling. The fact that there are substantial numbers of people who feel that there is nothing more to investigate when four American lives were lost and no one has answered for this crime provides an indication of how far our sense of justice has slipped.

This should not be a partisan issue, because the implications of ignoring or prevaricating about the underlying mistakes will have far-reaching consequences. The United States has diplomatic establishments throughout the world, and if they can be attacked without consequences, it greatly diminishes our influence despite any protestations to the contrary.

Jerry Brown Warns LAX Will Have to be Moved Due to Global Warming; Update: Aide Corrects: California Governor Jerry Brown, presenting his revised state budget to reporters in Los Angeles on Tuesday, warned that California my be underwater in the future--not because of his budget, but because glaciers in Antarctica will collapse and sea levels will rise four feet over the next 200 years.

Brown cautioned, "If that happens, the Los Angeles airport's going to be underwater. So is the San Francisco airport." As for the San Onofre nuclear power plant: "You’re going to have to move all that … That’s billions, if not tens of billions. Luckily, we can take a few years."

Update: An aide to the governor has corrected his claim that LAX will have to be moved, the Los Angeles Times reports:

“The governor misspoke about LAX,” said Evan Westrup, a spokesman for the Brown administration.

Environmental officials for Los Angeles World Airports, the operator
of LAX, said the airport has an elevation of more than 120 feet. “A
4-foot rise in sea level,” they said, “should have minimal impact on
airport operations.”

Since the beginning of our government’s efforts to make our southwest border less permeable, there has never been any intention to completely fence the entire two thousand-mile length of it—at least, not with a physical fence. After all, the Secure Fence Act and subsequent legislation only called for seven hundred miles of it in the most highly trafficked areas. But DHS felt it was important to have some sort of surveillance coverage along the unfenced areas. It needed to find a way to achieve this that was cost effective and quick. However, the agency was also painfully aware that it did not possess the in-house expertise to accomplish this, so the outsourcing of our physical border security began.

For months and months we heard that the NSA spying was no big deal because they only sucked up “the metadata” of all those phone calls. How important can the metadata be if they aren’t (as they claim) collecting the content of those calls. Important enough to use to decide whether or not to kill people! From the ABC News blog we get a report on the statement of General Michael Hayden, the former head of the National Security Agency.

Hayden made the remark after saying he agreed with the idea that metadata – the information collected by the NSA about phone calls and other communications that does not include content – can tell the government “everything” about anyone it’s targeting for surveillance, often making the actual content of the communication unnecessary.

It Begins: California Agrees on 'Compromise' to Change Proposition 13

It Begins: California Agrees on 'Compromise' to Change Proposition 13: On Tuesday, legislators, business groups and tax reformers reached a compromise to change part of California's Proposition 13, the legendary restriction on property taxes passed by referendum in 1978. At the time, Prop 13 heralded the beginning of an economic turnaround for California, as well as the beginning of the nationwide "Reagan Revolution." Democrats, however, have increasingly seen it as an obstacle to their spending goals.

The Sacramento Bee reports that the State Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee voted to approve a change in the way Proposition 13 treats commercial property. The new provision would allow a commercial property's value to be reassessed when 90% of that property changes ownership in a three-year period. The new amendment would not include incremental changes such as the buying and selling of stock, however.

Obama: Enforcing Immigration Law “Doesn’t Make Sense” | The Blog on Obama: White House Dossier: President Obama today told law enforcement officials they should be doing something else other than enforcing immigration law, which says a lot about how much Republicans can expect him to stick to the terms of any immigration deal.

From his remarks, made today at the White House:

It’s estimated that over 80 percent of the folks who are here on an undocumented basis have been here 10 years or longer. These are folks who are woven into the fabrics of our communities. Their kids are going to school with our kids. Most of them are not making trouble; most of them are not causing crimes.
