Cuomo declares 'disaster emergency' on gun violence in NY | WSTM: NEW YORK — In what he said is the first declaration of its kind in the nation, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a "state emergency" when it comes to gun violence. This comes amid a rise in violence across the state, including in upstate cities. We went from COVID to the epidemic of gun violence and the fear and death that goes along with it," Gov. Cuomo said at a news conference Tuesday. Cuomo said over the July 4th holiday weekend, 51 people were shot in New York. For perspective, he said 13 died from COVID in that timeframe. "This is a national problem. I get it. But somebody has to step up and somebody has to address it," said Cuomo. The governor said the state's seven-step plan will aim to treat gun violence as a public health emergency and use a data-driven approach to address violence.
