Jobs summit - solving the problem, or saving face?

A labor economist says a jobs forum being held today at the White House is merely a publicity stunt designed to give the impression that the Obama administration is taking proactive steps to attack the unemployment problem in the U.S.

President Obama is hosting a jobs summit today at the White House with the hope of generating ideas from CEOs, liberal economists, and union leaders on how to drive down the nation's high unemployment rate. The 130 guests attending the summit have been divided into six different discussion groups -- "green jobs," boosting small-business employment, government infrastructure spending, fostering growth of U.S. exports, business competitiveness, and workforce development/training.

James Sherk is a Bradley Fellow in labor policy at The Heritage Foundation's Center for Data Analysis. He says the decision to host the jobs summit indicates a recognition that the economy is doing worse now than the White House said it would be doing if the "stimulus" bill was not passed.
